Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. [Association Copy, inscribed by Ralph Harper on title page.] Hardcover and dust jacket. Small tears to jacket. Good binding and cover. Minor shelf wear. Pages unmarked. *Autographed by author.* "Ralph Harper (1915-1996) was a theologian, philosopher and Johns Hopkins University professor, is widely credited for introducing the study of existentialism to North America. An adjunct professor, Mr. Harper taught more than 45 graduate-level classes at Hopkins on subjects ranging from existentialism to mysticism to American fiction. The classes featured lively discussions rather than long lectures. Mr. Harper also was rector of St. James Episcopal Church in Monkton for 21 years. He was known internationally in academic circles and Harper wrote a dozen books, including "On Presence: Variations and Reflections," which in 1992 won the prestigious Louisville Grawemeyer Award in Religion. But it was his 1948 book, "Existentialism: A Theory of Man," that introduced the philosophy's themes of alienation and human freedom to the United States. He was twice named a Guggenheim Fellow." â" Baltimore Sun. Signed.
