Some minor foxing, particularly to the initial and terminal leaves, otherwise fine, with the bookplates of Stillman Drake and Delapre Abbey. Wing W2196, Lowndes 2922. John Wilkins (1714-1772), Bishop of Chester and Fellow of the Royal Society. Wilkins was a founder and first Secretary of the Royal Society. He was the author of a number of works including A Discourse Concerning a New Planet in which he used arguments similar to those of Galileo, and Mercury Or, The Secret and Swift Messenger. Philosophical Language, Wilkins's most notable work, was the first comprehensive proposal of a universal language written in English. "Calls for a universal language had increased as a result of the flourishing of vernacular literature and an increasing dissatisfaction with Latin, partly with regard to the difficulty of learning it, but also with regard to its ambiguities and complexities The vocabulary of this new language was to be built up by systematic modifications of the basic generic terms that were deemed to cover all the major categories of existence. A knowledge of the system would enable the reader, or listener, not just to recognize the signification of a word but also to understand how the referent fitted into the entire scheme of things. This is what made Wilkins's artificial language 'philosophical', not just universal in the sense that a unanimously agreed upon lingua franca would be." ODNB.

FIRST EDITION. John Wilkins, 16141672, theologian and natural philosopher. The most influential of Wilkins' works, his Essay sought to establish a new universal language for use in scholarship, trade, travel and politics. It was intended partly as a replacement for Latin which was the existing international language of scholarship. Wilkins' language was a series of symbols (all listed in a folding table) intended as a pasigraphy, a writing system where each written symbol represents a concept rather than a word or sound or series of sounds in a spoken language. Part two of the volume, which includes a separate titlepage, is entitled An Alphabetical Dictionary Wherein All English Words According to their Various Significations, are either referred to their places in the philosophical tables, or explained by such words as are in those tables. Having worked on his Essay for many years, Wilkins lost his house, and many of his papers, to the Great Fire of London. Determined to finish his work, he enlisted help from John Ray, Francis Willoughby, Samuel Pepys, and also the Royal Society of which he was a Fellow. Edward Nevill da Costa Andrade, 1887-1971, was an English physicist, writer, and poet best known for his scientific work (with Ernest Rutherford) that first determined the wavelength of a type of gamma radiation.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Wilkins, John An Essay towards a real character, and a philosophical language 1668. Very nice copy with 3 large fold-outs (at 186 and 2 at 441), 5 plates (167, 311,358,376). If you were curious about how Noah s Ark was laid out, and how Noah kept the lions separate from the gazelles, see page 167. Contemporary calf in very good condition. Borges has a nice essay about Wilkins. Wilkins idea, in brief is that a perfect language should encode its subject-matter. Thus, when encountering a new word, it would be evident what that word applied to. A good part of this project is coming up with a taxonomy that covers every kind of entity that can be spoken of. A big job.
