Tall 8vo. 7 x 9 in. xii, 253, [3] pp. Colour frontisp. 12 colour plates. Turquoise-blue publisher's cloth, black lettering front cover & spine, w/ d.j. Art Deco wraparound pictorial map cover art (small chip & tear to upper fore-edge w/ partial loss of few letters front cover, old tape repair), still VG/G- copy. First Canadian edition of this historical novel set against the backdrop of the Skeena River Uprising of 1886, interwoven with the Gitksan legend of Temlaham, triggered by the 1886-1889 measles epidemic, and expansion of Euro-caucasian settlement into the British Columbia Interior. Featuring splendid illustrations by five noted Canadian artists, including Kihn (1898-1957), best remembered for his efforts to paint portraits of Western Indigenous peoples, and had even been admitted into the Blackfeet tribe under the name "Zoi-och-ka-tsai-ya;" Emily Carr (1871-1945) one of the first major West Coast Canadian artists best remembered monumental art of the villages and people of the First Nations; and Savage (1896-1971) whose Beaver Hall Hill Group was closely allied to Jackson's Group of Seven, and painted several works of Northwest Coast First Nations in the mid 1920's.
