Uncorrected proof copy of the first edition, first printing. Publisher's original grey card covers with black titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with some rubbing and creasing to the extremities. The contents are clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps, the text block edges are somewhat spotted. Complete with the rubbed, nicked and toned dustwrapper that has a couple of short closed tears and some dust marks. Rare in this form. The proof differs from the published version in several aspects, here the author's name is printed as Ruth Falconer, the publication date is given as 1930; the running head on the first two signatures is 'The Simian Maid' ( on later signatures 'Dream') and the textual differences to at least two pages in which the published version has been shortened. The dustwrapper is identical to that of the published version, albeit trimmed to fit the proof. A science fiction time travel novel in which three contemporary characters are transported back a million years in a dream. (Bleiler; Locke: A Spectrum of Fantasy (this copy)).
