The first edition of this scarce work.ESTC citation number R10888.Illustrated with a frontispiece, two folding plates, one double paged plate, and one plate.Collated, complete.'A Century of Observations' and 'The Lives and Characters of the Physicians of Bathe' both have separate title pages, pagination and register are continuous.An interesting early work looking into the Romans Baths of Bath, natural hot springs in the center of the city.The hot springs were used for public bathing during the Roman rule of Britain, before being brought back into much popularity from the sixteenth century. In particular it was an important part of society culture during the Georgian eras, during the height of popularity in the city.The 'Character' section of this work was fairly controversial at the time, ripping into the character of fifteen physicians of Bath, most of whom were recent.By Thomas Guidott. In a rebacked full calf binding. Externally, with some rubbing and marks to the boards and spine. Light bumping to the extremities. A little loss of leather to the bottom edge. Institutional stamp to the top and bottom edge. An ex institutional copy from the Bath Reference Library, with labels to the paste downs, recto to the front endpaper, reverse of the title page, and recto to the rear free endpaper. Ink inscription to the recto to the front blank. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and clean with a few odd spots. A little edge wear to the folding plates and double paged plate. Blind stamp to the plates. The double paged plate is reinforced and repaired with tape to the gutter Good. book.

A few scattered brownspots, but in general clean and printed on good paper. First edition. Guidott, a physician of Oxford and later Bath, was greatly interested in the medicinal and chemical properties of spa waters, particularly those of Bath. This is his first book. Much of the work is of chemical interest, and Guidott discusses the analyses of Bath waters, pointing out that they contain niter, sulphur, vitriol, and several salts of metals.
