King, 1873), a wedding present inscribed to Alathea Gardner by the Archbishop of Canterbury, "Alethea [sic] Gardner With every highest & best wish from Randall Cantuar: June 1915". Alathea Gardner, second daughter of the first Baron Burghclere, married Geoffrey Fry on 30 June 1915 at St Bartholomew the Great, Smithfield. The archbishop, Randall Davidson, was a contemporary of her father's at Harrow.

Original cream cloth with dense pattern in red line covering substantial areas of lower sections, red ruled borders, and gilt title on front cover. No dust jacket. Edges of text-block a little toned, top edge also lightly spotted. Pastedown sides of flyleaves at both front and rear lightly toned. Neat manuscript verse - in faded ink on front pastedown (4 lines), in pencil dated '09 fully covering verso of front flyleaf and recto of following blank preliminary leaf, in pencil on blank verso of final leaf of contents (8 lines), and in pencil dated 25.6.10 on verso of rear flyleaf (6 lines) beneath column of four 2-digit numbers also in pencil. In addition, short gift inscription in ink dated Christmas 1908 on recto of front flyleaf, and occasional light pencil underlinings in text. Pretty little binding holding firmly, contents generally clean and tight. VERY GOOD copy.
