Rebound in half-leather by the library. Marbled boards and papertrims. For all three the leather corners and spines have shelving and stacking wear, scuffing. The boards are benign, scuffed. They are steady and sure. Volume 1: ABC-Eye. The front pastedown and frontispage have publisher's catalogue pages attached. Volume II: Fab-Nym; pub. 1883. The frontispage has a library label. Volume III: O Br-Tis; pub. 1885. The frontispage has a library label. The early pages have some mis-shelving (?) creases. The contents of all books are most agreeable. They are hale, very clean, clear, tight, fresh-faced, orderly, very confident. Complete 4 volume set, published 1882-88. This title was part of a 1981 Grolier Club exhibition of bibliographical milestones. In the exhibition's catalog, BIBLIOGRAPHY, ITS HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT, Breslauer/Folter describe it as the "first edition of the best bibliography of anonymously or pseudonymously published English works." Because it was not available from the Grolier Club's own huge library, a set for display had to be borrowed from Harvard. Volume I: (vii), columns 1-870 + 25 page errata/ publisher's catalog/index; Volume II: (iv), columns 871 - 1762 + Note; Volume III: (iv), columns 1763 - 2596 + 16 page publisher's catalog; Volume IV: (vii), columns 2597 - 2854 + INDEX TO AUTHORS' PSEUDONYMS (columns i - ccccxxiv) + 16 page publisher's catalog. The four volumes are bound in the original gilt-stamped maroon cloth. Oversize Hardcover. 6.75" wide by 10.25" tall by 7.5" thick (altogether). Volume I, columns 1-870; Volume II, columns 872 - 1761; Volume III: columns 1764 - 2596; Volume IV columns 2596 - 2853, with index ( i - ccccxxiii). First edition of the work was begun by Halkett, librarian of the Faculty of Advocates, Edinburgh; it was completed after his death by Laing, librarian of New College, Edinburgh and was edited by Laing's daughter Catherine. The spines of the four volumes are lightly rubbed at the raised bands, at the tops of the spines and along the bottom edges. Internally very good with very light scattered fox spotting. Previous owner's bookplate, Herbert Henry Raphael, inside each front cover.
