This book contains a multifaceted report about the Connecticut Monument that was built to honor Connecticut Union prisoners-of-war (POWs) who died at Andersonville Prison (Camp Sumter) during the American Civil War. The monument has a monolithic form sculpted from granite and features a bronze statue of the "Connecticut Soldier-Boy" who represents the Connecticut POWs. The artist who designed the statue was Mr. Bela Lyon Pratt of Boston. The dedication ceremony took place on October 23, 1907. Members of the 16th Connecticut Infantry, who had the highest number of soldiers imprisoned at Andersonville compared to any other of the state's regiments, and other Connecticut regiments were in attendance at the ceremony. Contents are listed as follows: "Notes on the Andersonville Trip" by Robert H. Kellogg (Sergeant-Major, 16th Connecticut Infantry and one of the Andersonville POWs), "Notes by a Guest" by Mary Bushnell Cheney, "Dedication Exercises," "Resolutions of the Legislature," "List of Connecticut Soldiers Buried in Andersonville Cemetery," "List of Connecticut Survivors of Andersonville Prison," "List of Guests," "Resolutions by Connecticut ex-prisoners," "Description of Stockade at Andersonville," "Plan of Andersonville Prison," "Letter from Charles E. Norton, Esq.," "Quotation from Boston Transcript," "Making of the Monument," and "Itinerary." Included are addresses or remarks made by Colonel Frank W. Cheney; Connecticut Comptroller Thomas D. Bradstreet; Joseph H. Twichell, Chaplain of the 71st New York Regiment; and Captain J. M. Bryant, Superintendent of the Andersonville National Cemetery. In his letter, Norton addresses Pratt and commends him for the statue he designed for the monument. The printed text quoted from a Boston Transcript newspaper article praises Pratt's statue. Andersonville Prison was established in February 1864 by the Confederate government as a POW camp. Over the 14-month span of Andersonville Prison's existence, about 45,000 Union prisoners-of-war were held captive there and about 13,000 of them died. In the infamous summer of 1864, it is estimated that 100 Union POWs died every day from disease, exposure, or malnutrition. The camp was beset by overcrowding, inadequate shelter, and a lack of sanitation, potable water, food, and medical supplies. Andersonville Prison was shut down by the Union after the Confederacy's defeat in April 1865.
