Philippe Danfrie (1531-1606) a gravé lui-même ces caractères et a également dessiné et gravé l'illustration de ce bel ouvrage. Le graphomètre, un demi-cercle, est un instrument de son invention. "Tel que l'a décrit Danfrie, et tel qu'il l'a réalisé, pour l'essentiel, le graphomètre a connu une carrière de deux siècles. . Nous ne connaissons pas d'instrument semblable antérieur à 1597, et il ne paraît pas que le graphomètre ait été décrit sous d'autres noms avant ou après cette époque". (Daumas).
