Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the tumultuous early years of colonial Virginia, a time of struggle and conflict between settlers and Indigenous peoples. The author vividly portrays the challenges faced by the colonists as they strive to establish a foothold in the New World. The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of historical events, including the aftermath of the Powhatan Uprising of 1622, and explores the complex relationships between the English and the native inhabitants. The story follows the lives of two brothers, John and William Burton, whose paths diverged dramatically in their youth. John, a successful shipping magnate, embodies the spirit of colonial enterprise, while William, a wanderer and adventurer, represents a more unconventional and enigmatic figure. Their reunion after decades of separation sets the stage for a compelling exploration of family, loyalty, and the enduring legacy of the past. Through the intertwined narratives of the Burton family and the historical context of colonial Virginia, the author examines themes of ambition, cultural clash, and the pursuit of a better life in a new land. The book's insights shed light on the complexities of colonialism and its impact on both the colonizers and the colonized, leaving readers with a deeper understanding of this pivotal period in American history.
