Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a compelling historical examination of Ossian's epic poems, which scholars widely debate as either authentic remnants of Celtic poetry or sophisticated literary forgeries composed by James Macpherson in the 18th century. Its introduction provides a thorough overview of the controversy and the lasting impact these poems have had on Celtic scholarship and cultural identity. The author analyzes the evidence for and against their authenticity, shedding light on the motivations behind Macpherson's controversial editing and translation choices. The book concludes by exploring the poems' influence on Romantic writers, particularly their profound impact on the development of national mythologies and the rise of Romanticism as a literary movement.
