In one of the first autobiographies ever written, Saint Augustine, the major Christian theologian of the early Western church and a renowned pastor and teacher, offers an extraordinarily personal account of his inward and outward journeys. This compelling work takes the reader from the depths of Saint Augustine's indulgent and dissipated youth to the glory of his conversion to Christianity at the age of forty~one. Endlessly seeking new experiences, the young Augustine had to overcome three main temptations~lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and pride~before he could end his soul's quest for internal meaning (the "famine of that inward food," as he put it). In vivid prose, he describes his early days as a lazy, mischievous teenager, scornful of the Christianity of his mother, Monica, and then tells of life with his mistress and illegitimate son. Augustine also details his restless travels through the great fourth~century cities of Carthage, Rome, and Milan in search of amusement and distraction, where he found "there sang all around me in my ears a cauldron of unholy loves." These "loves" included theater, scholarly indulgence, the opposite sex, and multiple explorations into different faiths, all of which left him spiritually empty. Confessions reveals Augustine's profound confusion and how his inner turmoil persisted until two ecstatic visions pointed him towards Christianity as the path to spiritual fulfillment. SAINT AUGUSTINE (AURELIUS AUGUSTINUS) is best known for the various letters, treatises, and religious and academic works he wrote in the latter half of his life, including De Doctrina Christiana and The City of God, his powerful exploration of Christianity in everyday life. Born in 354 in Numidia~present~day Algeria~to a pagan Roman father and a Christian mother, Augustine had to overcome the spiritual confusion of his youth before embarking on a lengthy, influential theological career. As a young man, he studied and taught rhetoric in Carthage, Rome, and Milan and briefly embraced Manichaeism~a sharply dualistic belief system~before his conversion to Christianity in the late fourth century. In 395, he was appointed Bishop of Hippo, a post he held until his death in 430.
