Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 2nd Edition. London: Oxford University Press, 1972. First edition thus, reprint edition. Hardcover. Full navy cloth with silver spine lettering. Fine in a fine laminated dust jacket, as issued. A tight, clean copy. Octavo, 944 pages, with index and black-and-white illustra…tions. "Blake: Complete Writings with Variant Readings" presents the full corpus of William Blake s poetry and prose, with textual variants and editorial apparatus provided by Geoffrey Keynes, the preeminent Blake scholar of the twentieth century. William Blake (1757 1827) was an English poet, engraver, and visionary artist, whose works such as "Songs of Innocence and of Experience," "The Marriage of Heaven and Hell," and "Jerusalem" profoundly shaped Romanticism and modern conceptions of the prophetic imagination. Geoffrey Keynes (1887 1982) was a surgeon, bibliographer, and collector, responsible for some of the most authoritative editions of Blake.

Add to basketPublisher's cloth, price-clipped justjacket. Very fine, practically as new. London, Oxford University Press, 1979. 8vo. xvi + 944 pp. A few illustrations. (Publisher:) "This definitive edition of Blake's writings - a volume which, The Times Literary Supplement observed, 'might serve as a model of how a great editor is able to ef…face himself from his work' - was first published by the Nonesuch Press in 1957, and reissued in 1966, with substantive corrections and additions, in the Oxford Standard Authors series. The writings are printed in chronological sequence, with a section of Blake's letters at the end, followed by Notes, and a supplement containing a small amount of new material. Peculiarities of spelling, frequent use of capitals, and abbreviations in Blake's original manuscripts and etched texts are preserved, but certain eccentricities of his punctuation have been regularized. The text of this 1979 impression incorporates further corrections, and new readings recently brought to light by American scholars at work on a Blake Concordance. Lines are numbered, and Blake's designs reproduced where they are essential to an understanding of the text. Sir Geoffrey Keynes, distinguished surgeon, bibliophile, and a book collector, prepared the first Nonesuch Press edition of Blake, in three illustrated volumes, in 1925. His bibliographies of Donne, Browne, Bishop Berkeley, Hazlitt, Hooke, Blake, Jane Austen, Brooke and Sassoon are well known. His Life of William Harvey (1966) won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for the best biography of the year, and a new edition of his Blake Studies appeared in 1971".
