The books of the Maccabees are the first chapter in the history of the encounter of Judaism with Hellenism; they describe the failure of a premature attempt at synthesus and the apparently successful resistance of militant Judaism. Professor Toynbee has described this as 'a fierce revolt against the Hellenizing policy of a Greek King of South-West Asia'.
