Moins étendu que son analogue en langue anglaise (The Treasury of David) le Commentaire d'Armand de… Mestral (1815-1873) nous offre : une traduction nouvelle des Psaumes, tout à fait intéressante par ses différences, et pas sa division en strophes et en hémistiches ; suivie d'une glose sur chaque verset, où sont regroupées des citations de divers commentateurs classiques (Calvin, Luther, Delitzsch.) mais aussi de noms moins connus, et d'exégètes juifs. Dans une Introduction générale de grande qualité, l'auteur défend un point de vue traditionnel qui attribue la totalité des Psaumes à David. Avec la majorité des protestants évangéliques du dix-neuvième siècle Armand de Mestral partage la conviction qu'une grande partie des prophéties de l'Ancien Testament doivent trouver leur accomplissement dans une restauration nationale et spirituelle du peuple d'Israël ; c'est donc naturellement qu'il voit dans beaucoup de Psaumes des promesses divines pour les temps difficiles qui précéderont le retour de Jésus-Christ. Il importe d'autant plus de le signaler, que notre évangélisme contemporain dérive à grande vitesse vers un prétérisme incrédule et controuvé. Du reste, ce bel ouvrage depuis longtemps non réédité, cité par Spurgeon lui-même, répond aux litanies habituelles qu'il n'existe pas de bons commentaires bibliques en français : seuls le parti-pris et le snobisme empêchent de les trouver et de les lire.
