Mai 1506 in Valladolid) war ein italienischer Seefahrer in spanischen Diensten, dem im Jahr 1492 die Wiederentdeckung Amerikas gelang. Wie heute bekannt ist, wurde der amerikanische Kontinent schon rund 500 Jahre vor Kolumbus von Leif Eriksson oder anderen Isländern entdeckt. Wenn Kolumbus gleichwohl bis heute als maßgeblicher europäischer Entdecker Amerikas gilt, ist dies darauf zurückzuführen, dass erst seine Reisen zu dauerhafter Kolonisierung durch Menschen anderer Kontinente in geschichtlicher Zeit führten. Im Bestreben, auf dem westlichen Seeweg von Europa nach Ostasien zu gelangen, erreichte Kolumbus am 12. Oktober 1492 die dem amerikanischen Kontinent vorgelagerten Karibischen Inseln. Er selbst war bis zu seinem Lebensende der Ansicht, eine Route auf dem Seeweg nach Hinterindien entdeckt zu haben. Anders als oft behauptet, glaubte er nie, Indien selbst erreicht zu haben. Die Bewertung seiner Taten und Leistungen ist Gegenstand kontroverser Debatten. Dem Entdeckerdrang, der ihm zugeschrieben wird, und dem Mut, in unbekannte Gewässer vorzustoßen, steht gegenüber, dass die Spanier in der Folgezeit die indianische Bevölkerung versklavten und Gräueltaten verübten. Ob Kolumbus auch direkt selbst für derartige Taten verantwortlich war, ist unklar. Seine Aufzeichnungen wecken allerdings auch Zweifel an einer allein durch Entdeckerdrang bestimmten Motivation.
