Please see pictures. Hemingway's third of six contributions to Collier's Weekly in his capacity as war correspondent, illustrated with 2 action photographs, plus Gellhorn's piece on Florence. She and Hemingway were married at the time, and she was also a war correspondent. See Hanneman C332. From the Hemingway opening paragraph, "On August 19th, accompanied by Private Archie Pelkey of Canton, in upstate New York, I stopped at the command post of the of the infantry regiment of the division in a wood just outside of Maintenon to ask for information on the front this regiment was holding. The G2 and G3 of this regiment showed me where their battalions were placed and informed me that their most advanced was at a point a short distance beyond Epernon on the road to Rambouillet (23 miles southwest of Paris), where the summer residence and hunting lodge of the president of France is located," and the Gellhorn, "We walked across the Ponte Vecchio in the morning. Before the war you walked across the Ponte Vecchio and wished you had enough money to buy any of the enchanting pieces of jewelry you saw in the old shops that lined the bridge. Or you walked across the beautiful Ponte Santa Trinita to the west or to the east, and you were not troubled with covetousness because there were no jewelry shops there." A challenged issue, but acceptable in its scarcity.…

The author's fourth of six contributions to Collier's in his role as war correspondent. From the opening paragraph, "Never can I describe to you the emotions I felt on the arrival of the armored column of General LeClerc southeast of Paris. Having just returned from a patrol which scared the pants off of me and having been kissed by all the worst element in a town which imagined it had been liberated through our fortuitous entry, I was informed that the general himself was just down the road and anxious to see us. Accompanied by one of the big shots of the resistance movement and Colonel B, who by that time was known throughout Rambouillet as a gallant officer and a grand seigneur and who had held the town ever since we could remember, we advanced in some state toward the general." Contact seller4-star sellerSoft cover. Condition: Good. Entire issue, November 4, 1944, in original wraps, light general wear, occasional minor white smudges noted at front wrap, shallow chipping at top edge, rear outer corner chipped away about 1-inch, mailing label Hemingway's fifth contribution to Collier's, this one cabled from France, in which he presents a first-hand account of Allied troops preparing for battle with the Germans. Issue also includes The Wounds Of Paris, by Martha Gellhorn (married to Hemingway at the time) who contributed from Paris where she was on assignment for Collier's as a war correspondent. In this piece, Gellhorn talks of the underground passages at Ivry, once used by the French as fortifications, now used as a prison by the Nazis, and of the torture cells around the city, including graphic descriptions of several methods of torture. From the Hemingway, "The wheat was ripe but there was no one there to cut it now, and tank tracks led through it to where the tanks lay pushed into the hedge that topped the ridge that looked across the wooden country to the hill we would have to take tomorrow. There was no one between us and the Germans in that wooded country and on the hill," and the Gellhorn, "In Paris the prisons and torture chambers and cemeteries equal the bombed and gutted houses of London. There was no high explosive here, and we tend to forget there are things which perhaps are worse than high explosive." See Hanneman C335. Scarce. John C. Pellew (illustrator).…
