David Rapaport's focus of interest throughout his career was on thought processes, particularly on how, despite his drive endowment, man's thoughts come more or less to correspond with external reality. Early in his professional life he came to believe that in psychoanalytic theory lay the groundwork for the thought processes, but that this theory required critical systematization as a prelude to its further development. His central goal became to make of psychoanalysis a general psychology, a psychology which would integrate ego and social psychology with Freud's pioneering insights into the id.
