Leather. Condition: Good. None (illustrator). A scarce edition of this popular primer by British author Fanny Umphelby, credited here as "A Lady". The twenty-third edition of this work. Scarce to find copies as early as this.In the original quarter calf binding, with marbled paper covered boards and gilt imprint to the spine. This book, styled in a charming question-answer format, offers a wide array of information on general knowledge, history, natural sciences, geography and more, designed for young readers.Published under the attribution of 'A Lady,' the volume was confirmed to be the work of Fanny Umphelby after her biography was added by her nephew, Robert Avey Ward, to the Dictionary of National Biography in 1900. An incredibly successful publication, the 1900 edition states that on publication in 1825, it "became at once a standard" book in the classroom. The book also caused a resurgence of popularity around books based on dialogue, presenting its information as a Socratic dialogue between a teacher and their disciple. In the original quarter calf binding. Externally, with wear and scuffing to the boards. Fading to the spine and less significant rubbing to the head and tail. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with offsetting to the title and rear endpapers and the odd spot to the contents. Good. book.
