Paperback. Condition: Good. Bartolom de Las Casas was a Dominican priest--a missionary who fought relentlessly for justice for the Native Americans and even for their status as human beings. He was fearless in standing up to the political and ecclesiastical powers of his time, and a tireless chronicler of events. In Bartolom de las Casas: Great Prophet of the Americas, Paul S. Vickery not only brings these aspects of this extraordinary man to life--but does so against the background of his own two conversion experiences in which he recognized his own hypocrisy as a seeker of wealth and owner of Indian slaves. The author richly describes Bartolom 's journey to the New World in search of wealth and prestige--and his outrage upon seeing the cruel treatment of the Native Americans. He soon acquired a reputation as the Defender of the Indians as he tirelessly preached, wrote, and lobbied to defend these indigenous people from those who sought to exploit and enslave them. More than a cleric, political activist, or simple chronicler of events, Las Casas became the very conscience of Catholic Spain, a nation grappling with the spiritual mandate to save souls and the human desire to accumulate wealth. His quest for social justice is as relevant for us today as it was in his own time. And this fascinating book reminds readers that, just as Las Casas changed his entire life's focus through the power of reading the Scripture, so too can we.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. At the turn of the last century, in a small village in northern Mexico, the Caravals have been practicing their Jewish faith in secret. The father Julio, spends his days dabbling with alchemy. His wife, Mariana, cannot speak, but is clairvoyant. Their son is obsessed with his search for gold. Central to the surprising destinies of these characters are the momentous events taking place high in the mountains, at the ancient and sacred cliff dwellings of Casas Grandes. Central to the story is the horrifying impact of the Spanish Inquisition, for 13 generations after all signs of Judaica were wiped from Spanish culture, some members of this family persist, behind bolted doors, in observing and studying Jewish rituals. For them, staying connected to their ancestral faith is paramount, and while each person's path to piety is different, each search proves powerfully moving. Alcalá embellishes straightforward prose with tinges of mysticism that will entice even the most spiritually disinterested. This tale of ordinary people in pursuit of honor, decency, and cultural connection is sure to resonate.Set in northern Mexico in the 1870s, Spirits of the Ordinary weaves the stories of women struggling against societal constraints, Mexican Jews practicing their religion in secret, and a gold prospector turned spiritual seeker in a spectacular desert landscape.Winner of the Washington State Governor's Writers Award and the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award when it was originally published in 1997, Spirits of the Ordinary incorporates styles and themes that the author has continued to explore in her later novels and nonfiction works: speculative fiction, environmental writing, crypto-Judaism, and the Mexico-U.S. borderland in the late 19th century.A tapestry of fascinating lives in a world where visions, dreams, and portents are part of everyday experience, Spirits of the Ordinary demonstrates that, as Alcalá writes in her introduction, "magic and holiness are all around us.".…

Paperback. Condition: Good. This "strong and finely rendered book" (Larry McMurtry) takes us to the Mexican-american border in the 1870s, conjuring up a magical tale of faith, gold, and family passions that "echoes the style of Isabel Allende and Laura Esquivel" (Washington Post Book World). Winner of the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association Book Award. A spectacular tapestry of folklore, spirituality, and landscape, this extraordinary first novel vividly blurs fantasy and reality as it details one family's search for identity. In a small village in northern Mexico, the Carabajals have long been practicing their Jewish faith in secret. The father, Julio, spends his days dabbling with alchemy. His wife, Mariana, cannot speak but is clairvoyant. Their son has allied himself with a Catholic woman and is obsessed with his search for gold. Central to the surprising destinies of these characters are the momentous events and the ancient and sacred cliff dwellings of Casas Grandes, high in the mountains. This story of two cultures, of the elusive bonds of love and faith, is dazzling in its originality. It is for all readers who loved Allende's The House of Spirits or Esquivel's Like Water for Chocolate.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. In the spring of 1971, when I arrived in Zihuatanejo, there was little need for maps or guidebooks of the area. At that time there were only some 4000 residents and a handful of buildings in this quaint little fishing village. Much to the dismay of thousands of early tourists, the Zihuatanejo-Ixtapa area on the Pacific Coast of Mexico has been discovered and now boasts a population in excess of 130,000 people. My guidebook is an attempt to update (now in it's sixth edition) the many changes that have taken place over the years in this once small fishing village cum resort destination. The focus of this book is to impart information not on the Internet or through any readily available sources. Easily read maps and a multitude of short stories are also included in this edition. After reading this guidebook, my desire would be that you would know where to go and what to do to maximize the enjoyment of your vacation. Many tourists have nicknamed this guidebook the Zihua Bible and I certainly hope this edition lives up to such exalted expectations. It is very ironic that Zihuatanejo means land of women of little importance but has been populated by a large number of single foreign women since the early 70's that can only be described as strong and very important in their societal roles.…
