Cloth. Condition: Very Good Indeed. Various (illustrator). First edition. A first edition guide to the artistry of designing carpets. An interesting and unique handbook of practical and technical instruction on designing carpets in terms of both art work and industrial design. With a focus on the art seldom recognised in the carpet manufacturing industry, Mayers' work aims to develop in its readers an appreciation of the higher qualities of design for the betterment of those in the field and the public alike. First edition. With dust-jacket in protective wrapper. With thirty two plates, monochrome and coloured, collated complete. This informative and specialised work presents the art of the carpet and the skill to designing it in an accessible manner, yet technical enough to educate those already in the field. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with dust-jacket. Externally, very smart, with only minor shelfwear to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Dust jacket has tape repair to the interior head and tail of the spine and the corners. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with some spotting to the front up to the title page, not affecting the text. Very Good Indeed. book.

First and only edition, first impression; considerably scarce in the dust jacket. Mayers was a prominent Kidderminster-based carpet-designer, "perhaps the most successful public designer of his era" (Haslam, Arts & Crafts Carpets, p. 32); his richly illustrated survey covers all aspects of design and manufacture, from 20th-century methods (Jacquard, Chenille, Axminster) to the traditional styles prevalent in Iran and the lands of the former Ottoman Empire. Large octavo. Colour frontispiece and 8 similar plates, 27 half-tone plates, 12 sketches to the text. Original green buckram, titles and publisher's device to front board gilt. With dust jacket. 2 leaves of advertisements to rear. Extremities rubbed as usual, cloth slightly faded, all plates bright and fresh. A very good copy in the clean dust jacket with a very faint crease to front panel and a minute hole to the spine.
