Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. A handsome visual survey of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610), tracing his development from his northern Italian beginnings and arrival in Rome through private patronage, major religious commissions, his growing influence, flight across Italy, and turbulent final years. The six chapters - Between Lombardy and Rome; The Favor of Private Patrons; The Great Religious Commissions; Rome: Caravaggio's Sphere of Influence; The Flight Across Italy; and Genius and Disorder - are followed by an index and further reading. The publishers emphasize the book's more than 100 color reproductions, including numerous enlarged details, an especially effective format for studying Caravaggio's dramatic lighting, naturalism, expressions, and handling of flesh and fabric. The 2007 Barnes & Noble edition is 191 pages. Particularly attractive reproductions include Boy with a Basket of Fruit, Boy Bitten by a Lizard, David with the Head of Goliath, The Flagellation of Christ, and numerous dramatic details drawn from Caravaggio's religious paintings. The reproductions were supplied by the Scala Archive, with additional image credits to museums and collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Gallery, Louvre, Uffizi, Prado, Hermitage, Vatican Museums, Kunsthistorisches Museum, National Gallery of Ireland, and others. The copyright page establishes the publication history quite clearly: © 2004 by Rusconi Libri. This 2007 edition published by Barnes & Noble, Inc. Translated by Alexandra Bonfante-Warren and printed and bound in China. The number line reads: 1 3 5 7 9 10 8 6 4 2, First Barnes & Noble Edition, First Printing, 2007. It is not the first edition of the work, since the copyright identifies the preceding 2004 Rusconi Libri publication. This distinction is worth making because some online records describe the Barnes & Noble issue simply as a 'first edition,' while at least one current bookseller calls it a reprint. Book is Near Fine in publisher's teal-green cloth with gilt spine lettering. Binding tight, square and secure; boards exceptionally clean with only negligible shelf evidence. Interior clean, bright and unmarked, with glossy color reproductions retaining excellent saturation and contrast. No names, inscriptions, bookplates, highlighting or other markings observed. Original pictorial dust jacket Near Fine, bright and complete, with excellent color and only very minor shelf/edge wear. Jacket artwork remains particularly striking, reproducing Caravaggio's The Lute Player across the front. Rear panel clean and bright with publisher's printed price adjacent to the ISBN/barcode. An unusually attractive copy of a book frequently encountered with considerably more handling wear. This edition is especially successful as a detail-study book. Caravaggio's technique depends heavily upon relationships between illumination and darkness, gesture, skin, fabric and facial expression; the designers repeatedly crop paintings to isolate those elements rather than relying exclusively on conventional full-composition reproductions. The dramatic double-page treatment of The Flagellation of Christ visible in this copy is a good example.

Buch. Condition: Neu. 512 pp. Englisch.
