No Binding. Condition: Good. No Jacket. The text in this engraving reads:Top Header: Ananias struck dead by St. Peter. Acts. V. 5.Bottom Inscription: Actor. V. 5. Ananie puni de mort par St. Pierre. N. I. 50. Ananias door Petrus met de doodt gestraft.Bottom Right Margin: N. I. 50.Rare 1754 Amsterdam Copperplate Engraving: The Death of AnaniasAn authentic 18th-century copperplate engraving capturing The Death of Ananias as he is struck dead before Saint Peter and the early church assembly (Acts 5:5). This highly dramatic New Testament scene features a striking juxtaposition between the collapsed figure on the floor and the authoritative figures on the steps, rendered with impressive interior architectural scale and deep cross-hatched shadows.18th-Century Dutch ProvenanceThis print originates from a 1754 New Testament volume published in Amsterdam by the cartographers and book publishers Josua and Reinier Ottens. Operating during the Dutch Enlightenment, the Ottens firm was well-known for its illustrated volumes. This specific plate is sequentially marked N. I. 50. in the lower right margin.Dimensions (Full Leaf)Sheet Size: 254 x 206 mm (10.00 x 8.11 inches)Engraving Technique & DetailsDetailed Composition: The lower foreground features the lifeless body of Ananias splayed across the stone floor beside scattered coins. Standing prominently on the stone steps above is Saint Peter, gesturing with authority alongside an assembly of the remaining apostles and disciples who look on with varied expressions of fear and awe. The scene is framed by massive classical architectural columns, a prominent stone niche, and an exterior street scene visible on the far left.Trilingual Inscriptions: Features typography in English, French, and Dutch within the margins:Top Header: Ananias struck dead by St. Peter. Acts. V. 5.Bottom Inscription: Actor. V. 5. Ananie puni de mort par St. Pierre. Ananias door Petrus met de doodt gestraft.Plate Impression: The print retains a clear, distinct plate mark from the copper press, with fine line cross-hatching creating rich textual contrast across the stone floor tiles, the shaded architectural recesses, and the heavy folds of the classical garments.Condition Report & AuthenticityA genuine, nearly 300-year-old print on historic paper. The sheet is stable with a dark, clear image impression, but it shows typical signs of age and significant structural wear along the left margin:Mild, even toning across the paper surface consistent with mid-18th-century paper artifacts.Scattered minor smudging, light handling marks, and faint surface discoloration specks are present primarily within the outer margins. The left edge (the original binding edge) shows severe, heavy rough margins with deep jagged tears, significant chipping, stitch holes, and substantial paper loss from where it was extracted from the volume binding. This wear includes a large jagged notch on the lower left side that breaks past the left plate mark border line, stopping just short of the main engraved image border. The top left and bottom left corner tips show noticeable missing paper fragments and fraying, well clear of all printed elements.A complete collector's example from the Ottens series, offered in honest, un-restored antique condition with notable margin wear as described.
