Hard cover, 16 mo, (3 1/2 x 6 1/4 inches) in green quarter cloth over plain pasteboard, includes the 16pp. "Boston Annual Advertiser" plus 518 pp., plus errata and several loose advertising pages at back. Features a separate seven page directory titled "People of Color" at the back, which may be the first time such a register has been included in this city Directory. CONDITION: Very Good Minus. Seems to be lacking the printed labels which should be on the the outer pasteboards. This does not have a map. Front hinge cracked. Binding is firm. A couple of prelims are loose and laid in,( in the correct order) both at front and rear. Text block edges a bit stained or spotted. The gilt title to the spine is mostly now illegible. Now protected in mylar. **Sabin tells us that Charles Stimson Jr. published this Directory annually from 1829-1846. (The earliest was produced in 1789.) A useful tool for the genealogist, sociologist, or other historical researcher. This is a scarce item in any condition and a real piece of Americana. Rinderknecht and Bruntjen (1992) 42-4678 p. 367. Printed hardcover with brown cloth spine, 6.25" tall, 26, 395, [1] pages, including a five page separate listing for "people of color". Covers heavily worn and spotted, binding strip and endpapers possibly replaced at some point in the early 20th century, hinges lightly cracked but secure, text block sound, pages age-darkened but clean, modern name and address stamp in blue at the top of the first page of the advertising section and at the bottom of the final page, map foxed and with numerous old repairs to the reverse side using clear paper tape, some additional separation along fold lines, but complete. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fair. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.

There is a bookplate from Columbia University with a withdrawal stamp inside front cover and a much older rubber stamp on the title page from the Boston Athenaeum. Many fine ads at the front. Contains 53 pages of information about streets, banks, public officials, etc. Pages 372-376 lists "People of Color". There are listings of some businesses and organizations, along with a directory of streets, but there are no advertisements. Spear p.51.

Covers worn and spotted, original spine replaced with tape, front hinge tape-repaired, some pages of the advertising section detached, rest of binding sound, map has two closed tears (one stitched with thread) but no paper loss, pages age-toned but clean, name written on front free endpaper, no other markings. Edges of textblock slightly soiled. Old name of former owner on flyleaf. Light foxing to many pages. A couple pages have very small closed tears at top. Pages of the Advertiser are darker than the Directory, as is common. [ 2 ] [ 18 ] 340 [ 2 ] [ 2 ] p. consisting of an original blank leaf, the Directory, an advert for the publisher, an advert for the New England Museum, and a new blank leat at end. An interesting and at times entertaining directory of this great American city in the early days of th Republic, covering African Americans, directions, homes, businesses, medical professionals, and more. A fun artifact of New England history.
