Exceptionally uncommon first novel by Corinth, Mississippi-born author and Hollywood screenwriter and actor Thomas Hal Phillips whose fiction efforts, although obscure, are highly regarded. A United States Navy World War II veteran and 1943 graduate of Mississippi State University, Phillips completed a master's degree in creative writing at the University of Alabama under the tutelage of renowned instructor Hudson Strode where his thesis evolved into this first novel which is among the earliest in the genre of American overtly themed gay literature and, in further challenging period stereotypes, being notable in both its Deep South setting and being by a southern author. Phillips followed THE BITTERWEED PATH with five other novels - THE GOLDEN LIE (1951), SEARCH FOR A HERO (1952), KANGAROO HOLLOW (1954), THE LOVED AND THE UNLOVED (1955), and RED MIDNIGHT (2002).
