Numerous full-page steel engraved portraits. Very good. Minor edgewear; expertly rebacked in leather at some point, with original gilt spine laid down; evidence of bookplate removal on front pastedown. Extremely discreet ex-library, with NO spine marking; sole indication is a small blind-emboss on the title page. First edition, a tight and handsome copy of this massive (3½ thick!) tome difficult to find in acceptable condition. Superb plates and biographical sketches of Illinois pioneers and politicos.
