The Beginning and the End, originally published at the outbreak of World War II captures the mature thought of this great… Christian existentialist philosopher. Berdyaev develops the eschatological themes prominent in his writing into 'a metaphysical interpretation of the end of the world, of the end of history.' Although insisting that the world's meaning depends 'solely on the condition that [history] will come to an end' (for 'endless progress.means the triumph of death'), he opposes both false chiliasm and passively awaiting the inevitable. Eschatology must be approached as a divine-human enterprise, in which our creative activity prepares the coming of the kingdom of God - a process that occurs at the personal as well as the cosmic level: 'What one needs to do at every moment of one's life is to put an end to the old world and to begin a new world.' 210 pp.
