Paris, F. Schoell, 1809. 8vo. xxiv,392 pp. With frontispiece (facs). Modern cloth. (slightly foxed; small hole in one leaf) Published without authors name on title-page, but the preface dedicated to Joseph Van Praet (librarian of Bibliothèque Nationale (Impériale) for more than half a century), is signed Jansen. Hendrik Jonas Jansen (1741-1812) went to Paris in 1770. He made a living as translator, bookdealer, publisher and librarian. In the Gutenberg-Coster controversy, he supported the claim of Coster. The dedication is followed by a short biography of Gerard Meerman, and a preface by Henri Gockinga. Gockinga was the editor of the Dutch version of Meerman's Origines Typographicae, published in Amsterdam in 1767. This work 'De l'invention de l'imprimerie' is in fact a French translation of the Dutch version. Includes - pages 237 to 390 - the first list of incunables printed in the Netherlands, of which Campbell notes: "La liste de Visser, copiée et augmentée, mais avec toutes ses fausses atrributions, par Jansen, n'avait pas été rendue inutile par l'ouvrage de Hain.".
