Science et Arts, 396pp, with the Cayley appearing on pp 199-214 (15pp). Bound in rose-colored paper-covered boards, leather spine labels. VG The text is very fresh, crisp, and bright. [++]This is the first French edition (and what seems to be the first translation of any sort of the paper) of the first part of a three-part work in English that appeared as "On Aerial Navigation," in the Journal of Natural Philosophy, Chemistry and the Arts, (Nicholson's)  volume 24 (1809) 164-174 (and which continued in two further papers in volume 25 (1810) pp 81-87, and pp 161-173. The original three papers also were accompanied by three engravings the first engraving for the 1809 paper was NOT included in the French translation. This was the introduction of Cayley to the continent and the dissemination of his monumental ideas to the French-reading world in the months after the publication of the English version."[++] "Cayley founded the science of aerodynamics and is generally credited with the invention of the airplane. He has also been called the world's first aeronautical engineer.  Cayley discovered and identified the four aerodynamic forces of flight weight, lift, drag and thrust and in 1799 took the crucial step of separating the system of thrust from the system of lift."--Jeremy Norman, History of Information [++] As Jeremy Norman rightly points out in his lovely History of Information site, Cayley deduces and expands on the fundamental issue of aerodynamics delivering his famous summary simply and beautifully: "He reduces the problem to the following statement: to ensure that a given surface supports a given weight by the application of a force whose point the support is the resistance of the air." (translated from pg 206 of the Bibliotheque Britannique relating to the passage of the 9 September Nicholson (published 1810) pg 168 (top).  The statement in the original English version from Nicholson reads: "the whole problem is confined within these limits, viz. to make a surface support a given weight by the application of power to the resistance of air." He separates the force of sustentation (lift, the force perpendicular to the airflow) from the retarding force or force of resistance (drag, the force parallel to the airflow)--this is a first in aerodynamic history. We find the terms "force retardatrice" on pg 206 line 3; "resistance direct" page 206 line 6; "resistance de l'air" pg 206 line 14. Other sections of interest (translated): "There is no proof that weight for weight a man is comparatively weaker than a bird it is therefore probable if he can be made to exert his whole strength advantage only upon a light surface similarly proportioned to his weight as that of the wing to the bird that he would fly like the bird and the ascent of Mr Degen is a sufficient proof of the truth of this statement."
