Condition: Good. Herbert Evelyn Caulfield Gatliff fought with the Coldstream Guards in the great War, although his pacifist views meant that he served just 6 months. Gatliff had a long career in the Civil Service working in a senior role at Treasury. He was also known for his love of nature and walking and was instrumental in setting up Youth Hostel in the Hebrides. The Gatliff Trust continues to this day. In this letter he writes of the passing of his father, his relocation to Devonshire, for the sake of his daughter Jane's health and schooling, his lack of knowledge of the 'Australian branch of the Family,' although he does see Guy Innes' name (well known Fleet Street Journalist) from time to time. Albert Tangeman Volwiler (1888-1957) was a college history professor. In this letter, written on the University of Pennsylvania letterhead where he is working on his Ph.D, Volwiler asks C.A. Hanna (1863-1950) for information regarding a George Croghan. Hanna was also a historian and Volwiler has noticed Hanna's research on Croghan in Hanna's book, "The Wilderness Trail" (1911). Specifically, Volwiler is looking for manuscript material relating to Croghan. Volwiler's "George Croghan and The Western Movement (1741-1782) was published in 1926. Two pages on Outlook stationery to a Mrs. James Edward Leach of Andover Mass. Harper relates that TR will not give his permission for an unnamed project that the Patent Office says needs TR?s release. One can only speculate on what this person had dreamt up that no doubt used the former President?s name or effigy. Still it is signed by Harper, TR?s British born secretary that served him from approx. 1910 through 1914.…

After moving to the U.S., Helen Adam was an important part of the "San Francisco Renaissance" in poetry, roughly a contemporaneous peer of the Beat Movement, but in fact Adam is seen as an immediately pre-Beat counterculture poet. Ecclesfield, Feb. 27, 1864. 1 sheet of blue paper, 110 x 190 mm, folded once, written over two pages and signed by Juliana Horatia Gatty. With a folded cream bifolium of a poem and two ink sketches, inserted and fixed to the rear page. Old folds, mounting residue to the last page, pin hole loss to last page not affecting sketch.  The letter by children's writer Juliana Ewing, to Miss Woodall, concerns the commissioning of an engraved seal, specifying onyx or cornelian and giving instructions as to size and shape, referring to an enclosed sketch. The inserted bifolium contains two pen-and-ink drawings with accompanying manuscript verses. The poem is about ladies that lose one of their group, who then springs up out of a box, to their shock and surprise. The drawings illustrate the poem, showing a group gathered around playing croquet and then shocked as the girl pops out of a box. The letter is written by Ewing; the drawings and verse either Ewing or one of her sisters. Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. Original Manuscript. Autographed Letter Signed [ALS] from Edwin Forrest, dated May 8, 1852. 7"x4 1/2" pasted on 9 1/2" x 6 3/4" paper leaf. Written in New York: "Dear Sir, I intended to send you this note long before this time, but have been prevented from so doing by a vanity of affairs." Forrest [1806-1872], generally considered to be the first successful American-born actor in classic English language plays, was immensely popular in the U.S. and Europe and probably amassed a larger fortune through his acting career than any other actor anywhere in the 1800's. He was born in Philadelphia and made his debut as Douglas in Hone's play "Douglas" in that city. Forrest gave what was probably the earliest American "black-face" impersonation in 1823. His refined the better parts of his acting style by studying Edmund Kean, and played Othello in Nee York in 1826, that being his first notable success. He was the first actor to encourage American playwriting about American themes, in part through contests he sponsored. In 1834 he was the recipient of a medal and a banquet honoring him as the first great American actor, in New York. He was a bitter rival of actor William Macready, and blamed Macready's influence when he was hissed in "Macbeth" in England in 1845; Forrest, in turn, hissed Macready's performance of Hamlet. These incidents were believed to be the cause of the Astor Place Riot in 1849, when Forrest's admirers attempted to prevent Macready from appearing in the Astor Place Opera House, resulting in 22 deaths. Forrest donated substantial amounts of money to his favored charities, and started a home for actors too aged or sick to support themselves. A school in Philadelphia is named after him. Agnes Mary Clerke (10 February 1842 20 January 1907) was an Irish astronomer and writer, mainly in the field of astronomy. She was born in Skibbereen, County Cork, Ireland, and died in London. Agnes Clerke was the daughter of John William Clerke (c. 18141890) who was, at the time, a bank manager in Skibbereen, and his wife Catherine Mary Deasy (b. c. 1819) whose father was a judge's registrar. She had two siblings; her older sister, Ellen Mary, was born in 1840, and her younger brother, Aubrey St. John, was born in 1843. All of the Clerke children were entirely home schooled. Following in her father's footstepswhile studying classics, he had also taken courses in astronomyshe developed an interest in astronomy from an early age, using her father's 4 inch telescope in her observations and had begun to write a history of astronomy at the age of 15. In 1861, aged 19, her family moved to Dublin, and in 1863 to Queenstown. At the age of 25, partly for health reasons together with her elder sister Ellen, she went to Italy where she stayed until 1877, chiefly at Florence, studying science, languages, and other subjects that would be useful in their later lives. In 1877 she settled in London. (Wikipedia) Upon her return, she was able to get two articles, "Brigandage in Sicily" and "Copernicus in Italy", written while she had been in Italy, published in the Edinburgh Review of October 1877. This led to her being asked by Adam and Charles Black, publishers of the Review, who also published the Encyclopædia Britannica, to write biographies of a number of famous scientists for the ninth edition of the encyclopedia. This work let to a number of other commissions, including the publication of the article on astronomy for the Catholic Encyclopedia. During her career she wrote reviews of many books, including some written in French, German, Greek, or Italian. In 1885, she published her best known work 'A Popular History of Astronomy during the Nineteenth Century', which has received recognition beyond the time it was written. Clerke was not a practical astronomer, instead collating, interpreting and summarising the results of astronomical research. In 1888 she spent three months at the Cape Observatory as the guest of the director, Sir David Gill, and his wife, and there became sufficiently familiar with spectroscopic work to be able to write about this newer branch of the science with increased clearness and confidence. In 1893 she was awarded the Actonian Prize of 100 guineas by the Royal Institution. As a member of the British Astronomical Association she attended its meetings regularly, as well as those of the Royal Astronomical Society. In 1903, with Lady Huggins, she was elected an honorary member of the Royal Astronomical Society, a rank previously held only by three other women, Caroline Herschel and Mary Somerville in 1835, and Anne Sheepshanks in 1862. Her sister, Ellen Mary Clerke (18401906), also wrote about astronomy. She was a devout Catholic all her life. The lunar crater Clerke is named after her. In 2002, the retired astronomy lecturer Mary Brück wrote a book on her, Agnes Mary Clerke and the Rise of Astrophysics. In 2017, the Royal Astronomical Society established the Agnes Clerke Medal for the History of Astronomy or Geophysics, which is awarded to individuals who have achieved outstanding research into the history of astronomy or geophysics. Vertical and horizontal creases to actual letter, light toning of mounting leaf, small divots on left side of mounting leaf from removal from a bound volume, else Near Fine. Nicely preserved early example of a handwritten and signed letter by the perhaps preeminent Protestant minister in American history (and an early social liberal), written in Brooklyn, NY, where he was by then giving sermons to crowds of more than 2,500 from his pulpit in the Plymouth Church (Congregational). The letter is a written as vouching for a student who had spent the evening at Beecher's home, and thus deserved a "credit mark". Born in Litchfield, Connecticut in 1813, Beecher was schooled in Amherst (Mt. Pleasant Classical Insitution)and eventually ordained by the New School Presbytery of Cincinnati. His ultimate international repute as an orator, lecturer, and advocate of such causes as the abolition of slavery, women's suffrage, evolutionary theory and scientific biblical criticism began to grow after he developed, in an Indianapolis pastorate prior to his famed Plymouth Church tenure, his notion that a sermon should focus on a single moral point for the purpose of specific moral development of the listener - a sermonal technique which still thrives.
