Add to basketHardcover. Condition: vg to near fine. Reprint. Elephant Folio. (6)pp., 10 plates, 33 (8)pp. Original green cloth with gilt lettering on spine. Frontispiece collotype. "The Ashmolean ostracon of the Story of Sinuhe has been more fortunate than some other important texts from Egypt in that its two halves, discovered or disposed o…f separately, have been finally reunited. The lower half, which had been broken into several pieces and put together by the dealer from whom it was purchased, was presented to the Ashmolean Museum by [Sir] Alan Gardiner in 1940, after some work had already been done on it. Not long afterwards Professor J. Cerny, while in Egypt, recognized the upper half and secured it for the Museum, which purchased it with a subvention from [Sir] Alan Gardiner. The details of its original discovery are unknown, but it can safely be assumed to have come from Der-el-Medinah. It measures 31.5 cm in width by 88.5 cm in height, and is thus larger than the Cairo ostracon of sinuhe (Cat. 15216) known as C." (Preface). Illustrated with 10 plates in collotype, plus the frontispiece, followed by 33 pages of commentary. Contains conclusive text and index at rear. Binding with light wear along edges. Previous owner's name inked to inside front cover. Binding in overall very good, interior in near fine condition.

Illustrated with a number of lithographic plates. The first edition of British Egyptologist, papyrologist, Anglican priest, and academic John W. B.… Barns' translation of the Ashmolean's ostracon of the 'Story of Sinuhe'.This is Barn's translation of the limestone ostracon - a stone fragment - containing a narrative composed around 1875BC, and set in the aftermath of the reign of Amenemhat III.The foreword explains that the Ashmolean's artefact, possibly the largest ostracon in existence, is here translated by Barns in the hope that 'an annotated edition of this Nineteenth-Dynasty version of the story of Sinuhe will prove useful as a textbook for those studying Egyptian textual criticism'.With a frontispiece and ten plates of lithographs of the ostracon and transcriptions of their text. Collated, complete. These plates are followed by thirty-three pages of commentary, printed in facsimile of Barns' own hand. To the rear is a discussion of the conclusions drawn from the translation and commentary, followed by an index. With the inscription of 'George R. Riggs, 30.6.64' to the head of the front pastedown.A fascinating first edition of this Oxford University Professor of Egyptology's translation of what is often considered one of the finest works of ancient Egyptian literature, although debate is still ongoing as to whether the text is based upon actual events, or is entirely fictional.
