Several edge tears to jacket. This is the second of two volumes devoted to the art of the three Scandinavian countries from about 400 to 1200 AD. These 800 years co…ver the period when the North changed from a barbaric world on the fringe of European civilisation to one which was part of the west European culture of the Middle Ages. It was an age of fundamental achievement and expansion and also a period of intense artistic activity, scarcely surpassed since. This volume deals with the later part of this period which saw the gradual conversion of Scandinavia to Christianity, and pagan Viking art forms giving way to Christian art. The author traces the development of Romanesque architecture in these countries from the first appearance of stone churches in 1030 to the beginning of the Gothic style. He treats in detail the three great cathedrals of Lund, Ribe and Viborg and their influence, and discusses the round or fortress churches necessary as a protection against attack, and the early introduction of red brick as a building material. The importance of wall paintings, stone sculpture, metalwork and tapestries during this period is also discussed. This work is lavishly illustrated with 160 black and white photographs, 12 colour plates, as well as 4 maps and numerous figures throughout the text. The author, Aron Andersson, is a curator at the Statens Historiska Museum, Stockholm.
