Condition: Gut. X, 387 S. / p. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - One of the most significant moments in the history of Western thought occurred when Aristotle determined to reject the Theory of Ideas, the basic metaphysical doctrine of his master Plato. The Platonic hypothesis, which postulates the ultimate reality of non-spatial and non-temporal Ideas, is remarkable for its philosophical economy. It has four distinguishable functions: it forms the basis of a logic, for an Idea does the work of a logical universal; it supplies Plato with an ontology, for an Idea is that which is in the full sense real; it gives Plato the ground for his epistemology, for one can know completely only that which is fully real, viz., an Idea; and finally it provides Plato with an explanation of the problem of value, for an Idea is not only that which is ultimately real but also that which is ultimately valuable. -- The present volume attempts to explore the consequences for Aristotle's thought when he asserted that Ideas do not exist. Professor Oates, in a brilliant and lucid analysis of the problem of being in relation to value, points out how Aristotle is able to retain Plato's logic by maintaining that the logical universal does not exist "apart" but rather inheres in the individual particular, the ultimate reality of which Aristotle holds in his own metaphysics of Being. This ontology is primary for him and he builds a corresponding epistemology which is basically empirical in character. But in the construction of the metaphysics of the individual particular, with its heavy emphasis upon ontology, Aristotle's attitude toward the question of value becomes inconsistent, incoherent, shifting. Whereas Plato's Theory of Ideas always keeps being and value together, Aristotle permits them to fall apart. -- By an examination of all the relevant passages in the Aristotelian corpus, Professor Oates identifies several different views of value, suggesting that he uses now one and now another according to the context or the particular problem under consideration. Much of the difficulty in understanding Aristotle, Professor Oates concludes, is a result of his shifting attitudes.
