Seinen andauernden Ruhm verdankt er seinem Hauptwerk, dem lateinischen Roman Metamorphosen, auch bekannt als Der goldene Esel, der zur Weltliteratur gezählt wird. Die Interpretation des Romans, der wegen seiner Vielschichtigkeit zahlreiche Rätsel aufgibt, gehört zu den schwierigsten Aufgaben der Klassischen Philologie. Die raffinierte Erzähltechnik und die geschickte Verhüllung der Absichten des Autors hat in der Forschung zu einer Fülle von konkurrierenden Deutungsansätzen geführt. Die in den Roman eingefügte Erzählung von Amor und Psyche hat seit der Renaissance das Lesepublikum fasziniert und eine außerordentliche Breitenwirkung entfaltet. Ihr mythologischer Stoff, die Liebesbeziehung zwischen dem Gott Amor und der Königstochter Psyche, hat Hunderten von Dichtern, Schriftstellern, Malern, Bildhauern, Komponisten und Choreografen Motive geliefert. An der wissenschaftlichen Diskussion über die Erzählung haben sich neben den Altertumswissenschaftlern und Literaturtheoretikern auch eine Reihe von Psychoanalytikern und Rechtshistorikern beteiligt. . Metamorphosen. Der ursprüngliche Titel dieses Romans lautet "Elf Bücher Metamorphosen", lateinisch Metamorphoseon libri XI, oder kurz "Metamorphosen" ("Verwandlungen"), lateinisch Metamorphoses. Er erinnert an das gleichnamige Werk des Dichters Ovid, in dessen "Metamorphosen" ebenso wie bei Apuleius Verwandlungen aus menschlicher in tierische Gestalt thematisiert werden. Der heute geläufige Titel "Der goldene Esel" (Asinus aureus) ist erst in der Spätantike (bei dem Kirchenvater Augustinus) bezeugtund gilt daher als nicht authentisch, doch hat der Autor möglicherweise einen Doppeltitel gewählt. (wiki) // . En soi, ce ne serait pas impossible. Apulee, nous le savons, met-tait sa coquetterie a parler et a ecrire, avec la meme aisance et le meme talent, le grec et le latin . Mais la n'est pas la question. Sur quoi se fonde-t-on pour lui attribuer cette version primitive? Sur ceci, que, les Metamorphoses etant un roman autobiographique, issu, d'autre part, d'un modele grec, Apulee ne pouvait en emprunter la ma-tiere a autrui; en d'autres termes, qu'il est a lui-meme sa source. Raisonnement inattaquable, encore qu'a la rigueur une autobiographie puisse trouver a se loger dans un cadre d'emprunt; mais que valent les premisses? Les Metamorphoses sont-elles vraiment, a l'exclusion du merveilleux ou a condition de savoir l'interpreter, un document d'ordre personnel? Et le signalement de Lucius est-il en tout point applicable a Apulee ? Cocchia en est si convaincu qu'il est alle jusqu'a restituer a Apulee, d'apres les donnees de son recit, l'etat civil qui lui faisait defaut. Les manuscrits ne connaissent que le gentilice Apuleius. Mais n'est-il pas clair que le nom de Lucius, sous lequel il se presente, est son propre prenom? Lucius et son frere Gaius - car il a un frere, un frere comme Apulee, admirable rencontre - ont les tria nomina : c'est l'Ane (c. 55) qui nous l'apprend (au fait, pourquoi pas Apulee? le renseignement meritait bien qu'on lui fit un sort en quelque endroit de la redaction latine). Par malheur, le manuscrit revele une lacune a la place du nom du pere. Mais seul nous manque encore le cognomen : or, celui-ci est ecrit en toutes lettres dans les Metamorphoses (I, 23, 6). Lucius Apuleius Theseus : tel est le nom que notre auteur tenait de l'au-teur de ses jours. Le cognomen Theseus, qui semblerait mieux convenir a un affranchi d'origine hellenistique, a de quoi surprendre dans une famille de bonne bourgeoisie provinciale. Mais voyons le texte :" Puisses-tu, dit Milon en accueillant son hete, prendre plaisir a sejourner chez nous. (XI) Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 1000.
