Small 4to, xv + pp306 complete with 13 coloured plates and 43 illustration in the text by Henry Alken with descriptive tissue guards. Hardcover, no jacket. Binding of half maroon leather over red boards with 5 raised bands, gilt titles and tooled gilt lines to spine in very good condition with a little rubbing to edges of spine and bottom edge with some loss of leather to bottom tips of boards and a few minor marks to boards. Inside, bar the odd spot of foxing all pages and plates in excellent clean and bright condition, no aging or toning. A lovely copy of this limited edition which famously satirically explored the key characters and archetypes of fox hunting by Surtees, editor, novelist, and sporting writer who William Morris described as "a master of life". It is superbly illustrated by Henry Thomas Alken an English painter and engraver chiefly known as a caricaturist and illustrator of sporting subjects and coaching scenes.
