John Albion Andrew was the 25th governor of Massachusetts, holding that office from 1861-1866. He served as governor through most of the Civil War, leading his state's contributions to the Union's cause. He was also a driving force behind the creation of some of the first African American units in the United States Army, including the famous 54th Massachusetts Infantry.
