Seller: Brothertown Books, Deansboro, NY, U.S.A.
Soft cover. Condition: Fair. This is a scarce specimen of a late Victorian Era paperback, published in 1889. The Bride of Lammermoor and The Abbot , two novels by Sir Walter Scott, here bound together, was issued by Hurst & Company as No. 28 in their Cosmopolitan Series . The book is in quite rough condition in part due to the cheap material used in its construction, and partly due to the exigencies of time's passage. For all that, this edition is scarce on the market. It represents a period in American publishing history when reprint houses such as Hurst were battling with other publishers for their share of the market, by publishing great masses of cheaply made paperback series. Despite the immense number of such books issued, they were frequently treated with scorn, or as ephemeral objects, to be quickly discarded once read. The print is so small - presented in two columns on a page that I m sure many readers gave up on the task of "scrying' such minute print, tossing the book aside in frustration, thus adding to the edition s scarcity. On the rear cover is a handsome advertisement for Sohmer Grand, Square, and Upright Pianos, manufactured in New York City by Sohmer & Company. Again, this copy is not for reading, but for collecting or display only. It is a fair place-holder. ********************************************** SERIES : The Cosmopolitan Series (No. 28) [ Issued Tri-Weekly ] / TITLE : The Bride of Lammermoor and The Abbot / AUTHOR : Sir Walter Scott (1771 - 1832) / IMPRINT : Hurst and Company / PLACE : 122 Nassau Street, New York / DATE : September 3, 1889 / EDITION : Reprint / STATUS : This edition OP PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION : Digest sized trade paperback; Contains a few line illustrations; approximately 5" x 7 1/2", printed wraps, stapled and glued - printed black on buff. On the front cover is a portrait of Scott; on the rear cover is a pictorial advertisement for Sohmer pianos. ************************************************* CONDITION FAIR ONLY - ROUGH This is a previously owned book which is in fragile condition and which presents quite roughly , with the following particulars noted : a place holder for collection or display - not for reading. EXTERIOR - The spine is much weathered, displaying darkening, splitting to joints, creasing, gouging, and surface loss to the extremities. Both the front and rear cover attachments must be considered as fragile. Cover edges display nicking and chipping, a few tears and loss at the rear fold. Surface rub, and weathering. / BINDING - Cover attachment is tenuous, else no leaves are detached or loose. Again, the integrity of the whole is fragile. / INTERIOR - Paper is quite toned; some corner creases, tears & etc. - no writing or marking.
