Paperback. Condition: New. An eminently poetic book, Langrishe, Go Down (Higgins's first novel) traces the fall of the Langrishes-a once wealthy, highly respected Irish family-through the lives of their four daughters, especially the youngest, Imogen, whose love affair with a self-centered German scholar resonates throughout the… book. Their relationship, told in lush, erotic, and occasionally melancholic prose, comes to represent not only the invasion and decline of this insular family, but the decline of Ireland and Western Europe as a whole in the years preceding World War II. In the tradition of great Irish writing, Higgins's prose is a direct descendent from that of James Joyce and Samuel Beckett, and nowhere else in his mastery of the language as evident as in Langrishe, Go Down, which the Irish Times applauded as "the best Irish novel since At Swim-Two-Birds and the novels of Beckett.".

Paperback. Condition: New. An obsessive and revealing self-portrait of a remarkable woman humiliated by the circumstances of her birth and by her physical appearance, La Bâtarde relates Violette Leduc's long search for her own identity through a series of agonizing and passionate love affairs with both men and women. When first p…ublished, La Bâtarde earned Violette Leduc comparisons to Jean Genet for the frank depiction of her sexual escapades and immoral behavior. A confession that contains portraits of several famous French authors, this book is more than just a scintillating memoir-like that of Henry Miller, Leduc's brilliant writing style and attention to language transform this autobiography into a work of art.

Dust Jacket: Fine Hardcover: Fine "Wittgenstein's Mistress by David Markson is a highly stylized, experimental novel in the tradition of Samuel Beckett. The novel is mainly a series of statements made in the first person; the protagonist is a woman named Kate who believes herself to be the last human on earth. Though her statements shift quickly from topic to topic, the topics often recur, and often refer to Western cultural icons, ranging from Zeno to Beethoven to Willem de Kooning. Readers familiar with Ludwig Wittgenstein's Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus will recognize stylistic similarities to that work.". Inscribed by Author(s).

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -In 'The Making of Americans,' Gertrude Stein embarks on an ambitious exploration of identity and cultural formation, employing a distinctive literary style characterized by repetitive structures and a stream-of-consciousness narrati…ve. The work defies traditional plot conventions, focusing instead on the inner lives and interconnectedness of its characters as they navigate the shifting landscape of American society. Stein's prose, marked by its lyrical quality and rhythmic cadence, invites readers to immerse themselves in the complexities of American identity from the late 19th to early 20th century, capturing both the mundane and the profound in a manner that reflects the fragmentation of modernity. Gertrude Stein, a pivotal figure in the avant-garde movement, drew from her experiences as a member of the expatriate community in Paris, where she developed unique insights into the evolving nature of selfhood. Her philosophical inquiries into the nature of existence and her encounters with contemporaneous artists and thinkers profoundly influenced her writing, culminating in this monumental work that seeks to articulate a new understanding of Americanness amidst a rapidly globalizing world. For readers interested in modernist literature, identity studies, or the evolution of American culture, 'The Making of Americans' is a crucial text that challenges preconceived notions and compels us to reflect on the intricate tapestry of our shared humanity. Stein's innovative approach to storytelling and deep psychological insight render this work an essential read for anyone intrigued by the interplay of individuality and collective experience. 604 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! A yellow-back is a cheap fiction novel which was published in Britain in the second half of the nineteenth century. They were occasionally called 'mustard-plaster' novels. Developed in the… 1840s to compete with the 'penny dreadful', Yellow-Backs were marketed as entertaining reading. They had brightly coloured covers that were attractive to a new class of readers, thanks to the spread of education and rail travel. Routledges were one of the first publishers to begin marketing Yellow-Backs by starting their 'Railway Library' in 1849. The series included 1,277 titles, published over 50 years. These mainly consisted of stereotyped reprints of fiction novels originally published as cloth editions. By the late nineteenth century, Yellow-Backs included sensational fiction, adventure stories, 'educational' manuals, handbooks, and cheap biographies. Some typical examples of authors of Yellow-Backs include Robert Louis Stevenson and James Grant. 92 pp. Englisch.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Wittgenstein's Mistress is a novel unlike anything David Markson or anyone else has ever written before. It is the story of a woman who is convinced and, astonishingly, will ultimately convince the reader as well that she is the only person left on earth.Presumably she is mad. And yet so app…ealing is her character, and so witty and seductive her narrative voice, that we will follow her hypnotically as she unloads the intellectual baggage of a lifetime in a series of irreverent meditations on everything and everybody from Brahms to sex to Heidegger to Helen of Troy. And as she contemplates aspects of the troubled past which have brought her to her present state - obviously a metaphor for ultimate loneliness - so too will her drama become one of the few certifiably original fictions of our time.'The novel I liked best this year,' said the Washington Times upon the book's publication; 'one dizzying, delightful, funny passage after another.Wittgenstein's Mistress gives proof positive that the experimental novel can produce high, pure works of imagination.' Previous second paperback edition: 1995. This item is printed on demand. Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.
