Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Illustrated with photographs First Edition with signed card to owner of book In the Second World War he became famous as one of the legendary fighter aces leading the top-scoring Spitfire squadron during the Battle of Malta. He provides a vivid and detailed account of this great air battle. Later, from the standpoint of a Headquarters staff officer, he takes the reader behind the scenes in some of the epic air operations of the war and describes the senior commanders whom he personally knew. After the war, Lucas entered politics. His account of his time as a Member of Parliament during the Churchill, Eden and Macmillan governments is wonderfully entertaining. After politics came business, and the most controversial of the |lives Luc'ss period as Managing Director and then Chairman of the GRA Property Trust. He was personally involved in the traumas which GRA had to face at the time of the financial and property sectors great collapse in 1974. He discloses in detail the circumstances which led to the Company's difficulties. He deals, too, with the curious relationship which developed between the Board and its financial advisers. He gives also the background to the strange attitude towards the Company of the ICI Pension Fund with whom GFtA had earlier entered into an £18 million financing arrangement. A happier pursuit was golf. In his time the world's out-standing left-handed player, Lucas s victory in the Boys Championship of 1933 was a prelude to numerous golfing ' honors the captaincy of Cambridge University, of England and, in 1949, of the British Walker Cup team against the United States. There were a handful of Americans in the RAF prior to the birth of the American Eagle Squadrons. Those first Americans have their story and so have those Eagle pilots who remained in the service of the Royal Air Force once the three Eagle Squadrons became the US 4th Fighter Group of the mighty 8th Air Force in September 1942. By that time, the Eagle pilots had claimed almost a hundred German aircraft shot down over England, the Channel and over occupied France. ***** Free shipping available to UK buyers.
