"No other area of Britain, far less Scotland, is better suited to tell the story of the Second World War. Many areas have a mining tradition. Many coastal communities have docks. Many areas can boast a rural and urban mix, and many areas welcomed different nationalities during the war years. But Levenmouth combined them all - like no other.".

Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. 2010. 95pp. B&W and colour illustrations. "It comes as a surprise to visitors and to many local residents to learn that the northeast of Fife was a centre of considerable coal mining activity for well over a hundred years during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and for probably many years before that. Whole families were involved in the many enterprises, with wives and children working as integral parts of teams alongside their husbands and fathers. Very long hours, often more than twelve hours each day except the Sabbath would be worked below ground, and collier families were commonly regarded as some form of sub-species of humans by the rest of the populace. The aim of this contribution is not to chronicle the hardships, or the complexities of social history involved, but to examine the physical constraints imposed by the geological structures, the geographical distribution of the coal seams and the difficulties encountered in attempting to exploit the mineral wealth of the area. Each coalfield site was beset with specific sets of problems controlled by the geological setting, and these determined the manner of workings which were possible at each locality. Inevitably, with the passage of time the records differ in their degree of completeness, so that, for example, the stories of the Ceres, Callange and Drumcarro mines are much more complete than those from farther east, where the workings were often earlier." The book is in excellent condition. There are no inscriptions and all contents are tight and clean.
