Soft cover. Condition: Fine. Vinodinee Neelkanth whose life spanned most of the twentieth century (1907 1987) was in today's language an empowered woman who lived her life according to her own beliefs and convictions. Born into one of the leading reformist families of Gujarat she made bold and unconventional choices in her life…and she began writing in 1928. Whereas her essays are milestones in Gujarati literature her short stories and novel focused mainly on women. Most of her journalistic writings aimed at encouraging women to speak up for themselves. Insofar as she strove to give women a sense of identity she may be regarded as a precursor of feminist literature of Gujarat. The first part of the volume is a brief biography of Vinodinee Neelkanth placing her life and writing in a historical perspective. Part two consists of translations of selected pieces of here writings from all genres giving an insight into the social change Vinodinee was attempting to bring about. The volume will be of interest not only to students and scholars of gender and feminist studies and sociology but also the general reader. 320 pp.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Contents Introduction/Joy Deshmukh Ranadive. 1. The adjustment policy programme in India and the household/Joy Deshmukh Ranadive. 2. Structural adjustment and social sector expenditure in Indian states/K. Seeta Prabhu. 3. Women's health a view from the household/Malavika Karlekar. 4. Perspectives… on gender poverty and environmental connections under economic reforms in India/Kumud Sharma. 5. The impact of the structural adjustment programme on gender and environment in India/Sumi Krishna. 6. Survey findings a photograph/Preet Rustagi Vasudha Jain and Indrani Mazumdar. 7. Conclusion/Joy Deshmukh Ranadive. Bibliography. Index. Eager to be global India's economic policymakers have accepted stabilization and structural adjustment as necessary tools of development. What does this mean for women. While gender has become increasingly important in development policies there is less awareness that policies and structural adjustment are never gender neutral. The myth of neutrality continues unchallenged while women often suffer de facto exclusion from the development process because of methods of implementation in the field. Government aid programmes requiring the consent of father or husband Green revolution facilitators who passed on expertise to men only Panchayat laws seeking to debar women with more than two children from holding office the instances are legion. Moreover there are the social expectations that women must make do with less less food less education less health care. In the era of globalization where resources for the social sector will come out of an ever shrinking common pool the burden on women to make do in the household will increase and this will jeopardize their ability to generate human resources. Globalization demands a high quality labour force but at the same time endangers the conditions that will produce such a force. In this meticulous pioneering study the contributors all well known women scholars from the fields of economics sociology education health and environment examine what happens once these macro policies affect women at the micro level within the household especially the poorer ones in urbans slums and rural villages. Joy Deshmukh Ranadive begins with an overview of structural adjustment then K. Seeta Prabhu in chapter 2 charts the decline in social sector expenditure by the state. Malavika Karlekar Kumud Sharma and Sumi Krishna in chapters 3 4 and 5 analyse the effect of this decline on the health and education sectors and on the environment. They show that coping strategies available to women invariably involve a cost in terms of increased domestic labour demanded of younger girls and women longer hours processing cheaper alternative foods and materials invisible piecework in the home which is poorly paid and marginalized. Privatization will inevitably push up the cost of health care even as it pushes low quality state services out of the market. Rationing of subsidized food through the public distribution system will decrease. This is brought out vividly in the household studies in Chapter 6 by Indrani Mazumdar Preet Rustagi and Vasudha Jain. Finally Joy Deshmukh Ranadive summarizes the book's findings in the conclusion. Policy planners and commentators who calculate the cost of globalization are rarely aware of these hidden penalties or lack hard data on them. This study aims not only to uncover the facts about the implementation of structural adjustment policies and the possible damage they can do but also to challenge the attitude that dismisses costs of this kind as incidental and place concerns over unequal gendered power equations in a central position in the discussion. 326 pp.

"These English translations from the Gujarati bring Saroj Pathak' s work to a wider audience, giving it the greater attention it deserves. Delving deep into the human mind, the stories depict the pitfalls of communication, the infinite possibilities of misunderstanding, of doubt and despair. At the same time they celebrate the human psyche's ability to bridge these chasms and make connections, of love, understanding, and friendship. Pathak considers the predicaments of both women and men as they grapple with the modernity that has been thrust upon them. Indeed, Pathak's interest in men as well as women characters distinguishes her from many other women novelists. "In her stories love and cruelty are closely intertwined, whether between a young loafer who tries to befriend a crippled girl with devastating results, or between an old couple, where the husband sends the wife away on a fool's errand through a misplaced concern for her. In 'The Vicious Round', a ladies tailor becomes obsessed with one of his young clients, who in turn is single-mindedly involved with a trousseau, while in 'The Ace of Trumps', a single, middle-aged working woman plots to escape from her servitude to her brother's family. "One of Gujarat's leading women writers, when Saroj Pathak died in 1989 at 110 pp.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. These writings translated for the first time from the Bengali are by women who were amongst the earliest to receive a modern education and become members of a reading and writing public Women wrote on a wide variety of concerns in many journals that had come into being because of the tremendous growth… of vernacular print culture These were often edited by women including some of the writers in the anthology Bharat Mahila Bharati o Balak Antahpur Mahila and Bharati to mention just a few The writers contributions helped build the image of the new educated woman self-confident opinionated transgressiveWho were these writers They came as expected from elite backgrounds most were from families that belonged to the Brahmo Samaj such as Bamasundari Devi Saratkumari Chaudhurani Hemantakumari Chaudhuri Kumudini Mitra Kamini Roy and Swarnakumari Devi and her two daughters Hiranmoyee Devi and Sarala Devi members of the family of Debendranath Tagore of Jorasanko Some were Hindus like Kailashbasini Devi Girindramohini Dasi Krishnabhabini Das and Anindita Devi Two Muslim writers of this period have also been included the remarkably erudite and pioneering Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain and the lesser known Khairunnissa Khatun a social reformer in her own right No information could be found on Jagadishwari Devi or Kusumkumari Devi the former debunked the notion that tradition demanded the Hindu woman abjure wearing shoes and that if they did they were westernized and the latter argued for consensual marriage well ahead of her timeThe articles cover a whole range of social issues from womens social powerlessness which gets intertwined with the powerlessness of the colonized to the need to participate in the growing nationalist protest against the first Partition of Bengal 1905 and the ensuing Swadeshi movement The early writings speak of the home as the proper domain for women where women should strive for good domestic management The later pieces written when the fight for education is no longer an issue persuade women to enter the public domain Thus there is much interest in what would be a suitable dress to wear outside how to help women gain some financial independence how to rouse their patriotism the wish to earn a living and so on Most interesting perhaps is the manner in which perceptions of patriarchy change As these writers make their way into the elite literary world and elite politics perhaps they also discover a new role for themselves in the construction of the nation 180 pp.

Paperback. Condition: As New. New. Contents Acknowledgements. Introduction. 1. Rural networking. 2. Reform and personhood development in policy and practice. 3. Village politics. 4. The gender of politics. 5. Gender kinship and practice. Conclusion. References. Index. The book relates the study of the political domain to that of… cultural practices and considers how translocal discourses facilitate local dialogue. Tenhunen argues that the gendered understanding of politics not only limits women's political participation but also enables and shapes women's political action and critical discourses because the local concept of politics does not exclude home kinship and the women's domain. She suggests that the notions of modernity and development are not applied in local disputes because of their universality or the supremacy of the western model of modernization but because these through their local interpretations offer concepts through which the taken for granted practices can be discussed and questioned which in turn become means of awakening of turning women's personal experiences into questions of social change. 174 pp.
