Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - In July 1979, the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Bologna received a proposal from Professor Breccia to hold an International Conference on 'Nitroimidazoles: Chemistry, Pharmacology and Clinical Application'. Because of the great interest in these drugs in various fields, I was very pleased to accept the proposal and to give to the Conference, the sponsorship of the University of Bologna. It was an added pleasure to accept the chairmanship of the meeting, together with Professors Sensi and Adams. At the same time, the Minister of Education approved the proposal also from the Faculty of Pharmacy, to offer an advanced Course on the tOpic: 'Radiosensitizers of Hypoxic Cells'. This Course was subsequently approved by a special Committee of the NATO Scientific Programme as an Advanced Study Institute. Since the subject matter of both the Conference and the Course are closely inter-related, it was logical to plan the Conference as part of the overall Course. Bringing together specialists from quite different and apparently unrelated fields of research, but all with an interest in the study and application of one single group of drugs, is a novel idea with intriguing possibilities. The volumes of the proceedings include contributions from experts with such diverse interests as synthetic chemistry, mechanism of drug action, parasitology, anaerobic bacteria and protozoa, pharmacology and toxicology, radiation sensitizers for use in radiotherapy and the development of drugs for use in cancer chemotherapy generally.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Naturally occurring antinutrients and food toxicants, and those formed during food processing, adversely affect the nutri tional quality and safety of foods. Because of the need to improve food quality and safety by plant breeding, fortification with appropriate nutrients, and processing methods, and because of the growing concern about possible direct relationships between diet and diseases, research is needed to: (1) evaluate the nutritive quality and safety of crops and fortified, supplemented, and processed foods; (2) define conditions that favor or minimize the formation of nutritionally antagonistic and toxic compounds in foods; and (3) define the toxicology, metabolism, and mechanisms of the action of food ingredients and their metabolites. As scientists interested in improving the safety of the food supply, we are challenged to respond to the general need for exploring: (1) possible adverse consequences of antinutrients and food toxicants; and (2) factors which contribute to the formation and inactivation of undesirable compounds in foods. Medical research offers an excellent analogy. Studies on causes and mechanisms of disease processes are nearly always accompanied by parallel studies on preventive measures and cures. Such an approach offers the greatest possible benefits to the public.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Even though artificial insemination is a simple technique that has been practiced for over a century, it has long been carried out under poor conditions due to an inadequate understanding of repro ductive physiology and antagonistic socio-ethical attitudes. Accor dingly, until fairly recently it was a medical act with a limited scientific basis which was practised more or less clandestinely. The development of semen preservation has totally changed the conditions of artificial insemination, especially in regard to flexibility and safeguards in its application. Although the use of fresh semen continues, it is now clear that the future of arti ficial insemination is closely linked to semen preservation. During the past two decades, semen banks have been developed in many countries. This has most often been the result of the initiative of individual physicians in either the private or public sectors. In France, a national system of semen banks (CECOS) was begun in 1973. Although there has been cooperation within this system in the areas of both research and management, a need to com municate and compare experiences with those from other countries was perceived. Thus, the first International Symposium on Artifi cial Insemination and Semen Preservation was planned and held in Paris, France in April 1979. Thirty-seven countries were represented byihdividuals from many concerned disciplines.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Recently, there has been a considerable upsurge of interest in heavily doped semiconductors. This interest is due primarily to the expanding range of applications of such. materials. Moreover, the heavy doping of semiconductors produces new effects (the forma tion of impurity aggregates, the appearance of allowed states in the forbidden band, etc J, which are of great interest in solid-state physics. The rapid growth in the number of papers on heavily doped semiconductors makes it difficult to review the results obtained so far. Therefore, many investigations carried out in 1966-7, par ticularly those on AIIIBV semiconductors, are not discussed in the present monograph, which represents the state of the knowledge in 1965. Nevertheless, the author hopes that, in spite of this, the book will be useful. An attempt is made, first, to review investigations of heavily doped semiconductors from a certain viewpoint and, sec ondly, to suggest some ideas (Chap. 5) which may be controversial but which are intended to stimulate further studies of heavily doped semiconductors which can be regarded as a special case of dis ordered systems. The work of American scientists investigating heavily doped semiconductors, in particular the efforts of E. O. Kane, J. 1. Pan kove, R. N. Hall, R. A. Logan, W. G. Spitzer, F. A. Trumbore, and many others, is well known to Soviet investigators. It gives me pleasure to learn that Western readers will now have an - v vi PREFACE portunity to become acquainted with the work done in the USSR. 436 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -During the last ten years, the diagnostic approach to disorders of bone and mineral metabolism has benefited considerably from the development of radioimmunoassay and competitive protein binding techniques for measurements of circulating parathyroid hormone, calcitonin, and biologically active vitamin D me tabolites. Accumulated experiences with radiogrametrical and densinometric methods of quantitating appendicular bone mass now facilitate the detection of changes in bone mineral content heretofore unrecognized by routine roentgenographic vertebral analysis. During this same decade, the diagnosis of metabolic bone disease and the skeletal response to remedial therapeutic ma neuvers have also been facilitated by the routine application of the bone biopsy. Improvements in tinctorial techniques, stan dardization in methodology essential for adequate preparation of thin undecalcified specimens, and the incorporation of tetracy cline bone formation or mineralization 'markers' should now herald the 'routine' use of this diagnostic procedure. Moreover, the compilation and ready availability of reference morphometric data, spanning the prepubescent years charac terized by skeletal growth and remodeling and the later senes cent period during which bone loss normally proceeds in an un- 7 8 FOREWORD relenting fashion, allow adequate differentiation between normal age-sex-related changes in skeletal turnover attendant on skeletal maturation and aging and acquired or inherited de rangements in bone metabolism. 164 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The present work is an attempt to provide a systematic treatment of genetic linkage in diploid heredity. Part A presents a general account of statistical methods which can be brought to bear on the problem. The primary emphasis is on the practical aspects of estimation. A large proportion, if not the majority, of mutant genes fail to match up to 'textbook' genes-with faultless segregation ratios and expression-yet, these are the materials with which the practical researcher has to cope. For this reason, it is important to know how to deal with the assortment of genes which may display significant deviations from expectation. Part B examines the accumulated data on linkage for most of the laboratory mammals and provides a comprehensive and up-to-date survey. The need for a critical review has often been expressed and it is hoped that the present analysis will fill the gap. The volume of material is probably the most important in the animal kingdom other than that for Drosophila species. 340 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The 52nd Colloid and Surface Science Symposium of the Divis ion of Colloid and Surface Chemistry of the American Chemical Society was held in Knoxville, TN, June 12-14, 1978, and one of its Sections was devoted to the topic of Solution Chemistry of Surfactants. Although it was billed as the Section on Solution Chemistry of Surfactants, but it was indeed a veritable inter national symposium on this topic as 51 papers by about 100 con tributors from 12 countries were listed in the program. The present volume and its companion volume 2 document the proceedings of the above-mentioned Section on Solution Chemistry of Surfactants. In 1976 there was held an international symposium on Micellization, Solubilization and Microemulsions in Albany, l the proceedings of which have been chronicled in two volumes. A great deal of material dealing with micelles contributed by a legion of prominent researchers constitutes these volumes but a few subtopics were not adequately covered; so it was deemed appro priate to cover these topics as well as the recent progress in the general area of aggregation of surfactants in this Section. Also as it is the amphiphilicity or amphipathicity\* of a surfact ant molecule which is responsible for both adsorption at inter faces and aggregation in solution, so it was considered quite apropos to include the topic of adsorption at interfaces in this Section. Concomitantly, the present volumes not only cover the aggregation phenomena but also the adsorption at interfaces. 548 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The authors of this book have been in charge of over thirty industrial contracts of various length (from six months to three years); the companies involved covered a wide range of industrial activities, including steel making, hot and cold rolling, aerospace research, automobile manufactur ing, chemical manufacturing, coal mining, bronze casting, and mechanical engineering. All contracts were related to problems connected either with the preliminary design of production systems or with the management of these systems. The problems that the authors investigated involved not only designing and scheduling, but also the modeling, analysis, and evalua tion of production systems. The book is based to a large extent on the experience gained in working on these contracts and the mathematical procedures presented are those that have been applied during the course of work on at least one of the contracts. Moreover, the authors have always kept in mind an idea which seems pivotal in the world of industry: the difficulty in companies lies much more in determining the exact nature of a problem and defining the criteria to be taken into account, than in solving the problem itself. 408 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This volume constitutes the Proceedings of the November 7-9, 1977 Conference on PROCESSING OF CRYSTALLINE CERAMICS, held at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. It was the Fourteenth in a series of 'University Conferences on Ceramic Science' initiated in 1964 and still coordinated by a founding group of four ceramic related institutions, of which North Carolina State University is a charter member, along with the University of California at Berkeley, Notre Dame University, and the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. In addition, two other ceramic-oriented schools, the University of Florida and Case-Western Reserve University, have also hosted Conferences in the series. These research-oriented conferences, each uniquely concerned with a timely ceramic theme, have been well attended by audiences which typically were both inter national and interdisciplinary in character; their published Proceedings have been well received and are frequently cited. This three day conference was concerned with (a) scientific aspects of all process steps which must be combined and controlled effectively and sequentially in producing crystalline ceramics (both oxides and nonoxides), and (b) utilization of these principles in developing processes for several classes of advanced ceramics critical to present and future technology. 700 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book is the proceedings of a Symposium entitled 'The Physics of Solid-Solution Strengthening in Alloys' which was held at McCormick Place, Chicago, on October 2, 1973, in association with a joint meeting of the American Society for Metals (ASM) and The Metallurgical Society (TMS) of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME). The symposium, which was initiated and organized by the editors of this volume, was sponsored by the Committee on Alloy Phases, Institute of Metals Division, TMS, AIME, and the Flow and Fracture Section of the Materials Science Division, ASM. The discipline of Alloy Design has been very active in recent years, during which considerable stress has been placed on the roles of crystallography and microstructure in the rationalization and prediction of properties. Underestimated as a component of alloy design, however, has been the importance of physical property studies, even though physical property measurements have tradi tionally been employed to augment direct or x-ray observations in the determination of phase equilibrium (and, indeed, metastable equilibrium) boundaries. 320 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Turbulence, mixing and the mutual interaction of turbulence and chemistry continue to remain perplexing and impregnable in the fron tiers of fluid mechanics. The past ten years have brought enormous advances in computers and computational techniques on the one hand and in measurements and data processing on the other. The impact of such capabilities has led to a revolution both in the understanding of the structure of turbulence as well as in the predictive methods for application in technology. The early ideas on turbulence being an array of complicated phenomena and having some form of reasonably strong coherent struc ture have become well substantiated in recent experimental work. We are still at the very beginning of understanding all of the aspects of such coherence and of the possibilities of incorporating such structure into the analytical models for even those cases where the thin shear layer approximation may be valid. Nevertheless a distinguished body of 'eddy chasers' has come into existence. The structure of mixing layers which has been studied for some years in terms of correlations and spectral analysis is also getting better understood. Both probability concepts such as intermittency and conditional sampling as well as the concept of large scale structure and the associated strain seem to indicate possibilities of distinguishing and synthesizing 'engulfment' and molecular mixing. 484 pp. Englisch.

The Advanced Study Institute (ASIl was held from August 30th to September 11th. 1986 in the Abbey of Fontevraud (France). The ASI was attended by 112 participants from a wide scientific horizon and from twentyone different countries. It was in some way a follow-up of the ASI held in Maratea. Italy in May 1981 and which was published in the NATO ASI Life Science series as volume 45. While much has been learned about the way the cellular machinery maintains and transmits the genetic heritage. as well as how these processes are regulated. little is Known about how the interactions between the various partners involved are taKing place. The interactions of drugs and proteins with nucleic acids are of evident importance in the understanding of these problems. The spectacular advances in recombinant DNA technology and the increased sophistication of biophysical techniques. in particular :-ray diffraction and nuclear magnetic resonance. have created a scientific environment which is highly promising for the future of research in molecular biology. These advances permH the serious hope that biology on the molecular level may become a r-eality. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Although the history of photomedicine dates back thousands of years, with even preliterate cultures appreciating the healing properties of sunlight, for many workers in the discipline photomedicine is associated with the observation about 100 years ago of Niels Finsen, a Danish physician. Finsen recognized that people with tuberculosis who lived in Norway and who had very little exposure to sunlight often developed facial lesions (lupus vulgaris) which would decrease and sometimes disappear during the summer months. This very observant physician reasoned that artificial light ought to produce the same effect as sunlight and began utilizing the radiation from the newly available carbon arc. At first, he used a glass lens to concentrate the radiation, but since this produced considerable burning, he replaced this with a hollow glass lens filled with water. However, while this reduced the heat burns, it did not actually duplicate the effect of direct sunlight. Finally, using a hollow lens filled with water but equipped with quartz windows, Finsen was able to imitate, even improve upon, the effect of sunlight. As a result, lupus vulgaris was practically eliminated from the Scandinavian countries. 688 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This volume is a sequel to our 1996 compilation, Computational and Constructive Design Theory. Again we concentrate on two closely re lated aspects of the study of combinatorial designs: design construction and computer-aided study of designs. There are at least three classes of constructive problems in design theory. The first type of problem is the construction of a specific design. This might arise because that one particular case is an exception to a general rule, the last remaining case of a problem, or the smallest unknown case. A good example is the proof that there is no projective plane of parameter 10. In that case the computations involved were not different in kind from those which have been done by human brains without electronic assistance; they were merely longer. Computers have also been useful in the study of combinatorial spec trum problems: if a class of design has certain parameters, what is the set of values that the parameters can realize In many cases, there is a recursive construction, so that the existence of a small number of 'starter' designs leads to the construction of infinite classes of designs, and computers have proven very useful in finding 'starter' designs. 384 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -With the development in recent years of NMR spectrometers capable of recording with a minimum of effort data that are both accurate and reproducible, a need has arisen for spectra catalogs and data books to aid the researcher. The ability to correlate a spectrum to a precalibrated chart accurately (to within 0. 02 ppm) has made chemical shift, along with the character of the spectral lines produced, an increasingly important tool in configurational analysis-a tool which this book is designed to complement. It is known that the chemical shift of a proton can be influenced by atoms as much as five or six carbons away, a fact of great importance to compound identification. The entries in this book, arranged according to proton environment, enable the researcher with a hypo thetical structure already proposed for his unknown quickly to locate examples of compounds having similar structures. An index of molecular formulas and a shift index, which should prove useful in hypothesizing alternate structures for the unknown and in checking out the hypotheses, have also been provided. The data collected represent some 4800 shifts from the spectra of about 1200 compounds that appear in the catalogs of Varian Associates, Sadtler Research Laboratories, and the American Petroleum Institute, whose cooperation is gratefully acknowledged. The alphanumerical code that is the basis of our presentation, and the explanation of its use, are borrowed intact from the NMR Spectra Catalog of Varian Associates, for whose permission to use this material we are especially grateful. 452 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Dr. V. V. Ol'shevskii is perhaps most familiar to Western readers as the author of 'Characteristics of Sea Reverberation,' published in translation by Consultants Bureau (New York, 1967). The present book, 'Statistical Methods in Sonar,' is, in part, a sequel to the first book, where now the author's stated purpose is 'to acquaint a broad range of specialists with the use of contemporary statistical methods for solving theoretical and applied sonar problems. ' As the author quite properly observes, the work is illustrative, devoted to a variety of relevant, specific technical problems from an analytical point of view, and is not in any way intended to be an all-inclusive treatise. Nevertheless, as the reader can verify subse quently, the author has succeeded in accomplishing his stated purpose. He has, moreover. provided us with a use ful and, in a number of instances, provocative work, which even five years after its original appearance retains its freshness and interest with material not to date covered in other books on the subject (for example, see Horton [~Q], Stephens [41] ). \* In this Foreword we first concisely review the author's material, on a chapter-by-chapter basis, after which a short general critique is given. Attention is called to various topics of particular interest to the professional audience. as well as to a number of highlights which deserve the reader's notice (a few additional comments on the technical editing are then included). 264 pp. Englisch.

' \* These 16th century frustrations of Michel de Montaigne which most graphically reflect his experience with renal colic still plague approximately 1 per 1000 individuals in the United States annually. Since as many as 75% of clinically. apparent episodes of renal colic represent single nonrecurring events, physicians not in frequently approach the differential diagnosis of nephrolithiasis in a less than adequate fashion and assume that the incident may prob ably never recur after the single attack. However, the ureteral or bladder stone actually represents one form of abnormal crystalline precipitation; parenchymal nephrocalcinosis, silently progressive azotemia, and asymptomatic renal pelvic calculi may also stem from the same pathological process(es) which conditioned the for mation of the ureteral or bladder stone. In this regard it is worth emphasizing that the postmortem incidence of renal calculi is some tenfold greater than that presumed from surveys wherein a clinical attack of nephrolithiasis is the sole determinant. \*In Familiar Medical Quotations. This is a 'fluorescence' year, and the three invited lecturers are experts in techniques that are at, or perhaps yet a bit beyond, the forefront of our understanding and technology in that field. The common denominator in selecting these subjects was that each is approaching a full elucidation of theory, and active develop ment of practical hardware, and that each presents analytical pos sibilities which can hardly be ignored in the next generation of commercial instrumentation. In other words, these are techniques that many of us shall likely find ourselves using by the end of the decade. The greatest difficulty in selecting the subjects was the need to overlook others, particularly 1) the increasing inter est in 'in-situ' or on-line analytical control, for tagging, identi fication or sorting; and 2) the broad subject of the computeriza tion of instrumentation, with its powerful impact on the design of hardware, and its open invitation to the theorist to create more exact mathematical models of the analytical process, regardless of complexity, in the expectation that programmers will find ways to implement solutions in affordable, dedicated computers. 420 pp. Englisch.

But all the signs are that even more will be required of researchers in the field over the next decade, for COMADEM directly addresses a whole range of issues that are likely to become increasingly important to companies as competitiveness increases along with the uncertainties resulting from rapid technological change. Already for example, businesses are having to scrutinize the economics of plant and machinery in greater detail than ever before; reliability is becoming a crucial factor as the costs of unscheduled breakdowns rise and there is increasing pressure on companies to demonstrate and assure improved health and safety conditions, especially in light of the growing number of catastrophic accidents that have occured throughout the world. Because it offers solutions to these and similar problems, COMADEM is now gaining an international reputation as a problem-solving, user-friendly and financially beneficial multi-discipline with immense potential. Many people at the senior management level are now convinced that COMADEM has much to offer and are wasting no time in reaping maximum benefit from the latest developments. The fact that the first UK informal seminar on COMADEM - COMADEM 88 - proved to be a great success and had a truly international flavour reflected this growing interest in the new field. 564 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -In recent years psychology has considerably expanded and en riched its relations with medical practice, first and foremost with psychiatry. This orientation toward experimental abnormal psy chology has been closely tied to the practical tasks of psychiatry: differential diagnosis, establishment of the structure and extent of impairment, and the dynamics of mental disorders as affected by treatment, etc. Experimental abnormal psychology has been no less important for the theoretical problems of psychology and psychiatry. The study of pathological changes in mental processes helps in dealing with questions about the structure and formation of mental activity. The research findings of abnormal psychology also have important implications for overcoming biologizing tendencies in the interpre tation of human psychology. The present book does not try to provide an exhaustive expo sition of all divisions of abnormal psychology. It introduces the reader only to those problems which at the present time seem to be best worked out experimentally: the breakdown of intellectual capacity, thought disorders, the methodology of setting up an ex periment in the psychiatric clinic, and certain questions relating to motivational disturbances and psychological growth and decay. Some rewritten sections from the author's earlier book, 'The Pathology of Thinking,' have been included. v vi FOREWORD The present volume is intended for psychology students, for psycholOgists, and for physicians working in psychiatry. 172 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -For many years ergonomists and human engineering specialists have made significant contributions to the solution of problems faced in the area of human labour and to the introduction of their research results and field experience into the process of equipment design. However, the rapid increase in complexity of equipment in use as well as in development demonstrates the necessity of broaden ing the point of view continuously. The workshop held in Munich from March 22nd to March 26th, 1982, was an excellent opportunity for the participants to discuss their respective interests and their interpretation of needs for future research. The workshop was sponsored by the Human Factors Special Programme Panel of the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO. This sponsorship, together with the helpful assistance rendered by Drs. Bayraktar, Kroemer, and Sanders, is gratefully acknowledged. This volume contains the papers presented during the workshop. All these papers are directly related to the general aim: the ex change of experience collected in the field of ergonomic data for equipment design on the one hand and the definition of unexplored areas on the other. It is hoped that this presentation will help to define future research methods in the area of ergonomic data and set into motion fruitful discussions on the validity of the data in use today. 296 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The 1976 Cargese Summer Institute was devoted to the study of certain exciting developments in quantum field theory and critical phenomena. Its genesis occurred in 1974 as an outgrowth of many scientific discussions amongst the undersigned, who decided to form a scientific committee for the organization of the school. On the one hand, various workers in quantum field theory were continuing to make startling progress in different directions. On the other hand, many new problems were arising from these various domains. Thus we feIt that 1976 might be an appropriate occasion both to review recent developments and to encourage interactions between researchers from different backgrounds working on a common set of unsolved problems. An important aspect of the school, as it took place, was the participation of and stimulating interaction between such a broad spectrum of theorists. The central topics of the school were chosen from the areas of solitons, phase transitions, critical behavior, the renormalization group, gauge fields and the analysis of nonrenormalizable field theories. A noteworthy feature of these topics is the interpene tration of ideas from quantum field theory and statistical mechanics whose inherent unity is seen in the functional integral formulation of quantum field theory. The actual lectures were partly in the form of tutorials designed to familiarize the participants with re cent progress on the main topics of the school. Others were in the form of more specialized seminars reporting on recent research. 488 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Among seismic waves generated by widely dilferent types of sources, the waves that are the most interest ing and of the longest duration are usually surface waves (which are also called normal waves, interference and channel waves, natural vibrations of layers, etc. ). These waves are distinguished by their dispersion and reso nance, and are used in many investigations - in the determination of the structure of the medium (the existence of surface layers and waveguides), in the determination of the coordinates and properties of the source (in par ticular its energy and mechanism), in the identification of subterranean exploSions, in the mapping of micro- seisms, in the tracing of storms, etc. Outlines of the wide literature concerning surface waves can be found in [2, 9, 40J. Surface waves can be classed as Rayleigh or Love waves, depending on their velocity and polarization: the displacements of particles in Rayleigh waves are parallel, and the displacements in Love waves perpendicular, to the vertical plane containing the direction of propagation (some variation from this polarization is possible close to the source or in the presence of horizontal inhomogeneities in the medium). The present work is devoted to the calculation and investigation of Love waves in a vertically layered medium. The method used is based on the spectral theory of linear differential operators. ' This method is much more effective than previously applied methods based on the approximation of the medium by a set of homogeneous layers. 108 pp. Englisch.

By means of slow and empirical selections, it has been possible to greatly increase both quantity and quality of plant crops. This procedure has brought the most useful cereals to a state of refinement that seems to be difficult to further improve by the same methodology. Indeed, natural sexual mechanisms were always used to cross closely related sexually and genetically compatible organisms; the selection procedure consisted of isolating the most promi sing progenies. Obviously, by this way, plants could only share preexisting genetic pools. On the other hand, the last decade has seen drastic modifi cations of the experimental plant sciences, with the appearance of new technological possibilities. Because of this profound reshaping of our experimental ap proaches, other means can now be realistically envisaged in order to achieve similar or even higher goals. It is, for instance, possible to attempt completing sexual crosses (where both male and female gametes bring together the genetic informations necessary for growth and development of the offspring) by parasexual means by which novel genetic informa tions could possibly be added to the heritage -. At the limit, such genetic manipulations could enable man to create plants capable of producing new substances characteris tic of unrelated plants or, more generally, of other living or ganisms. Even if these possibilities might appear quite remote, the interest of Scientists has been awaken and, indeed, several at tempts to such genetic manipulations have already been made. 620 pp. Englisch.

Under the auspices of this Commission conferences covering these subjects were held in Hamilton, Ontario (12-16 September, 1960), in Vienna (15-19 July 1963) and in Winnipeg (28 August-1 September 1967). After the last of these conferences the Commission felt that the position regarding nuclear masses was reasonably good and that as a consequence the fundamental constants should get more emphasis in future conferences. For this reason they were very pleased to accept an offer from the National Physical Laboratory to accept the main burden of organizing the Fourth International Conference on Atomic Masses and Fundamental Constants.
