Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -The Neuropsychology of Individual Differences: A Developmental Per spective was designed to sliIVey the complexities and subtleties of neu rologically based differences in human beings. By conceptualizing and presenting subject matter in a developmental sequence, we hoped to emphasize the inseparable union between the science of neuropsychology and the study of human behavior. Following a brief introductory chapter, the volume opens with chap ters concerning critical preliminary questions, such as establishing a foundation and rationale for a neuropsychological basis for individual differences and consideration of important methodological issues. It pro ceeds with discussions of the role of neuropsychology in the individual's efforts to organize the world via such basic means as perception and temperament. Three chapters follow that discuss individual differences in higher cortical functions: cognitive ability, language, and learning. Neuropsychological differences between the sexes and in the expression of psychopathological and neurological conditions comprise the topics for the next three chapters. The final topical chapter provides a discussion of rehabilitation of neurological disorders in children, and the volume concludes with a synthesis of all contributions.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - The idea for this issue arose during a gathering of scholars to com memorate the hundredth anniversary of Moritz Schlick (1882-1936), the philosopher from Germany whose influence gave Austria its most characteristic philosophical voice between the two world wars. He was cut off, tragically, in his prime and while he escaped the exile that awaited most of those who thought like him, he was unable (sadly for philosophy) to continue to steer their thoughts in his own direction and he even lost some of the credit for work already done. Thus it seemed to some of his former pupils and to others more remote from him in the tra dition that a small collection of papers throwing light on his especial con tribution and on the extent to which it is still active or still needed today was a requirement of justice no less than of piety. Tscha Hung, a mem ber of the Vienna Circle and since director of the Institute for Western Philosophy at Peking University, was the chief mover here. Also among the contributors, Ludovico Geymonat (Professor at Milan) was a visitor to the Circle and a friend of Schlick. Henrich Melzer and Joseph Schlichter were Viennese pupils of Schlick's. The former died in the war of 1939-45, the latter is still prominent in the cultural and educational life of Israel.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - This is a comprehensive handbook on the relationship of air pollution to incineration. Incineration is becoming the predominant method of dealing with many of our waste products and its most significant envi ronmental impact is on the air. This book includes information on emissions as well as on equipment design. Two chapters deal with the regulations governing incinerator emissions as well as the thermal destruction of hazardous wastes. Four chapters describe the nature of the emissions generated by the incin eration process. These particulate, gaseous, and odor emissions, are hazardous as well as deleterious to public well-being and aesthetics. Also included is a complete and timely discussion of dioxin generation and discharges. Three chapters describe the incineration equipment in general use today and methods of calculating gas flows and air discharges from these systems. Five chapters discuss the types of gas cleaning equipment available with sizing information and expected efficiencies. The nature of the gas cleaning process is discussed in detail. Criteria for selection of the opti mum system for a particular application is also included. The dispersion of an atmospheric discharge to the surrounding areas and/or communities is a vital concern in assessing the nature of that discharge and its impact, or potential hazards. A chapter is devoted to a relative simple method of estimating atmospheric dispersion.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - A dominant feature of our ordinary experience of the world is a sense of irreversible change: things lose form, people grow old, energy dissipates. On the other hand, a major conceptual scheme we use to describe the natural world, molecular dynamics, has reversibility at its core. The need to harmonize conceptual schemes and experience leads to several questions, one of which is the focus of this book. How does irreversibility at the macroscopic level emerge from the reversibility that prevails at the molecular level Attempts to explain the emergence have emphasized probability, and assigned different probabilities to the forward and reversed directions of processes so that one direction is far more probable than the other. The conclu sion is promising, but the reasons for it have been obscure. In many cases the aim has been to find an explana tion in the nature of probability itself. Reactions to that have been divided: some think the aim is justified while others think it is absurd.
Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - It goes almost without saying that there has been a marked increase in the incidence of sexually transmitted diseases throughout the world in the past two to three decades. Indeed, despite the progress that has been made in methods of diagnosis and treatment, the sexually transmitted diseases as a whole are the most common communicable diseases and as such constitute an important health problem. The increase in incidence may be accounted for by changes in sexual behaviour, the introduction of contraceptives and the increasing mobility of the population. In addition, during the same time period, the number of infectious agents recognized as being sexually transmitted has increased considerably. These include Chlamydia trachomatis, herpes simplex virus, cytomegalovirus and hepatitis B virus. Indeed, some are as dependent on sexual transmission as the agents which cause the traditional venereal diseases and collectively they cause morbidity which has out-stripped that caused by gonorrhoea and syphilis. It could almost be said that to know the sexually transmitted diseases is to know micro biology. However, the approach taken in this book has not been to consider individual infectious agents and evaluate what they do and do not cause but to consider clinical conditions and what might be responsible for them. To cover the complete spectrum of the sexually transmitted diseases in a comprehensive way now takes a text book of massive proportion.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - The field of pediatric oncology encompasses four groups of malignancies - acute leukemias, brain tumors, lymphomas and solid tumors. 1'he history, diagnosis and management of children with acute leukemias and lymphomas has been thoroughly examined in several excellent textbooks of pediatric hematology and oncology. Bl'ain tumors have historically been managed by neurosurgeons and radiation therapists. 1'he role of the pediatric oncologist in the management of these patients is evolving. This book was written to provide a thorough historical evaluation of the most frequent solid tumors of children. A detailed examination of the natural history of these tumors is essential to the design and evaluation of therapeutic trials. The highly lethal nature of many of these tumors, the occurrence of some of them at several different primary sites and the rarity of these tumors have made systematic study of them difficult. Conclusions regarding the efficacy of a particular modification of the therapeutic strategy can be strongly influenced by the assumed natural history of the tumor. I have tried to develop as accurateJy as the literature would allow a picture of the natural history of the common malignant solid tumors, knowing that the image would be imperfect. I adopted a convention which was employed in all graphs constructeil from case reports summarized from the literature.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Dramatic cultural changes have occurred in the areas of food, nutri tion, and health in the United States. Today, the clarion call is for fitness with 'trim-muscular' in and 'skinny-pale' out. The 'me generation' has turned into a robust health seeking 'we generation,' with emphasis on group participation in an ever-increasing array of health clubs. Com bined with this renewed interest in fitness is an increasing acceptance of technology, which has resulted in the expectation of a high quality of life through the use of technology rather than through its banishment as was the case in the late 1960s and 1970s. Thus, we see the use of indi vidualized computer programs for diet, exercise, and improvement of athletic performance through motion analysis of the event. Aging has become an accepted phenomenon and the long fruitless search for perpetual youth seems over. Old is beautiful as long as it is associated with the trim and robust look of other age groups. This is due to the changing demographics of the United States, as well as recogni tion of the simple fact that age is not a drawback in achievement levels in most areas of our society. These changes, which are in many respects the antithesis of the beliefs of the 1970s have led us to write this book. We are going to attempt to use the same style of communication we used in our previous book, 'Food, Nutrition, and You' but the focus and content is quite different. 304 pp. Englisch.

Several years ago, a small group of enthusiasts was gathered together by Mario Gonzalez-Ulloa to write the history of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. There was the feeling among them that experience and knowledge should be shared by all those who practice this art and this science, and that its creation and progress would be alive and present with a chronicle of this surgical specialty. Their chapters have been written. These chapters have appeared in Aes thetic Plastic Surgery, but they are now collected in book form, and the individual style of each author has been preserved. Papagiannis Department of Astronomy Boston University Boston, Massachusetts 02215, USA 1. THE SYMPOSIUM AND THE PROCEEDINGS IAU Symposium 112 - The Search for Extraterrestrial Life: Recent Developments, was held in Boston and in particular at the new Science Center of Boston University, June 18-21, 1984, and was attended by about 150 participants from 18 different countries. It was the first official scientific meeting organized by IAti Commission 51, the youngest of all IAU Commissions, which was established only in 1982 at the 18-th IAU General Assembly at Patras, Greece. This Volume of the Proceedings contains nearly 70 papers with about 90 authors from 20 different countries, including two papers from our Soviet colleagues (Kardashev and Slysh) who had not been able to attend our Symposium in Boston. The Volume is divided into eight Sections, the first of which serves as a general introduction, and the other seven correspond to the seven Sessions of the Symposium. 608 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Reviews and use of the first edition as the textbook for a senior-division uni versity course indicated the need for a number of corrections and clarifica tions. Although no new topics have been introduced, the new edition should be more clear and useful. A novelty in the Notes and Sources Appendix should facilitate reference from the notes back to the text. Far that purpose, the page number of the text to which each note refers is indicated in square brackets following the serial number of the note. The FMC1 color-difference formula has been substituted everywhere for the Friele-MacAdam formula, including the reference to the sources in Note 52. The FMC1 formula was actually used in the investigations reviewed in Sects. 8.3 and 8.4. The Friele-MacAdam formula given on page 151 of the first edition, which I thought was equivalent to the FMC1, was erroneous and should not be used. The formulas for the geodesic chromaticity diagram, on p. 153 of the first edition, were based on observations by 14 normal observers (last reference in Note 51). They have been replaced by the formulas based on the observations of PON, for consistency with all other formulas and discussions in the book. Figure 8.29 in the first edition was based on the PON data and on the formulas printed below it in the new edition. Therefore, Fig. 8.29 is un changed. 252 pp. Englisch.

The main scope of the text guides students towards a critical understanding and handling of data sets together with the ensuing testing of hypotheses. This approach distinguishes it from many other texts using statistical decision theory as their underlying philosophy. This volume covers concepts from probability theory, backed by numerous problems with selected answers. 364 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This volume reviews recent progress in the study of dynamics of star clusters. The meeting focused on the enormous progress of both the observation and the theoretical modeling of star clusters. New results from the refurbished Hubble Space Telescope (HST) include the mass function down to the hydrogen burning limits, white dwarf sequence, and central density profiles of 'post-collapse' clusters by star counts. On the theoretical side, this symposium saw the first direct evidence of gravothermal oscillation through N-body simulation, which was made possible by GRAPE-4, the dedicated special-purpose computer for N-body simulation. Numerical techniques to combine stellar evolution and dynamical evolution of the cluster were presented. The book will be of primary interest to astrophysicists. 92 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Input-output modeling has, through the years, provided a consistent and unifying focus for IIASA's economic research. Scientists working in the Institute, first in the economic modeling task of the System and Decision Sciences area and later within the Economic Structural Change project, have cooperated extensively with colleagues throughout the world in advancing and contributing to input-output work. Perhaps the most notable aspect of these efforts has been the joint work with the INFORUM Project to develop linked systems of national models. Experience gained from the INFORUM-IIASA studies has been of great benefit to other members of the I/O community, but this is by no means the end of the story. Contributors not connected with INFORUM have also brought their own very valuable insights and knowledge to bear on the subject, and input-output modeling has moved progressively away from being a purely academic specialization. A number of the methods developed have direct application to economic analysis and policy formulation, and I/O techniques have achieved widespread use in both governmental and commercial environments. This volume presents the results of the fifth in a series of meetings organized by IIASA to promote methodological advances in the subject and to draw on a pool of I/O expertise so as to further the aims of the Institute's in-house economic research. 272 pp. Englisch.
