Add to basketAn authoritative work on one of the most remarkable figures in English history. Marshal, the only knight to have a contemporary biography written about him, was possibly the greatest tournament knight in Europe in his time, a man of extraordinary physical prowess, and an example and advocate of emerging ideas of chivalry and fig…hting service throughout Europe, winning immense wealth through his championship on the field, wealth, in those days of aristocratic sponsorship, that would dwarf a Tennis or football champion today. He was a mentor to his sporting generation respected for his redoubtable and humourous character. He also became a highly effective general under Richard the Lionheart and other kings whose grateful grants of land eventually made him one of the great landed magnates of the realm. In the chaos of King John's war with most of his barons, he proved to be the only figure sufficiently respected by all sides to broker a deal of sorts. His championship of Magna Carta sought to secure a constitutional arrangement which established basic rights, still foundational for our own time. On John's death the country was heading to civil war. He staked his life and all his wealth to secure the constitution under the existing Plantagenet dynasty in the person of the child Henry, John's eldest son, who he crowned Henry III. But Henry's minority threatened anarchy and the French had already invaded. He defeated the French, himself still fighting in the thick of the battle at the Seige of Lincoln aged seventy, when few survived, even infirm, beyond their fifties, including aristocracy. He was chosen to be Regent of England to secure the peace, which he did effectively and generously. With that, and helped by his defeat of the French king Louis, he thereby propelled the nascent sense of Englishness in the embryonic English nation. He remains one of the most important figures of our constitution to this day through his championship of Magna Carta which he re-issued under his own seal during his Regency. A fierce old man, but much loved, loyal to those who depended on him. Having survived the whimsical rule of Steven and John, he summoned to his deathbed the boy king Henry, for whom he had won the throne telling him that, if he wasn't a good king, he prayed that he should be damned by God. He finally declined towards death with loyal friends around him, his daughter singing to him, and his wife with him to whom, unusually for the times, he had remained faithful throughout their long close marriage. Not a bad end for someone who began as the younger son of minor gentry. And until recently hardly anyone knew anything about him. Copies issued by Routledge/Taylor & Francis from 2003 till Feb 2015 did not have illustrations and this copy is one of those. Otherwise fine in illustrated boards.

Add to basketCloth, 8vo, 24 cm, xii, 679 pp. Indexes the persons appearing in 24 standard biographical dictionaries of various countries. From the preface: "The present work . Is a guide to the biographies of.every man or woman, not still alive, who has achieved eminence or prominence, from the dawn of history until this day in the twentieth… century on which this preface is being written. The work covers all countries and all generations. An endeavour has been made to include every one whose work or whose memory can be said to have survived until to-day, in the scheme of the undertaking. In order to confine a work of this description within manageable limits, it has not been possible to give more than the barest details of the lives of the men and women with whom it deals. The nationality, country of adoption, and profession of [the] subject have been given in every instance. Wherever possible [the author] has added the years of birth and death, but when these latter could not be traced, the period of activity has been stated. In some instances also, especially in the case of writers, the principal work or works have been mentioned." Contents agetoned, otherwise Good.
