Add to basketHard Back. Condition: Very Good. No Dust Jacket. First Printing Stated. 246 Pages. Tan cloth with white lettering to the spine and impressed into the front board the author's last name. Laid in (pasted) are two clippings. One with his photograph that appears to be somewhat of an obituary. The other clipping is a short descriptio…n of the present book. In and out of these essays wanders The Man with the Calabash Pipe, a sardonic bachelor who refused to light his heater since a likeable mouse is in residence underneath it. His aged friend the Horned Husband Kachina Chief is another recurring character, a walking embodiment of an Indian sense of humor. But the important person is Oliver La Farge himself, talking as if with a friend about the things that concern him most. Contents in 47 Essays: The Man with the Calabash Pipe: I, New Mexico and Santa Fe, Understanding the City Different, Smokeless Cultures, The Man with the Calabash Pipe: II, On Courts - and the Crossbow, The Man with the Calabash Pipe: III, The Bird-Watchers' Wars, Growth of a City: An American Story, The Man with the Calabash Pipe: IV, Santa Fe vs. Santa Fe, Nine Cents and the Machine, Wearing Down the Gas Company, Some Folklore and a Monument, The Season of Fiesta, The Man with the Calabash Pipe: V, Criticism and the Experience of Writing, The Man with the Calabash Pipe: VI, Hearing from the Public, A Ban on Laughing Boy, Regional Writing - Is What? Contact seller5-star sellerHard Back. Condition: Good. 377 Pages. Spine is a bit frayed at the top and bottom of the spine. One bumped and worn corner. This is the 1946 Riverside Press edition, though obviously a used book, is still complete and reasonably tight with white pages. From the Author's Notes: All the main characters are. fictional except - per…haps - Fey. One summer day, the year before she died, Mary Austin and I drove from Santa Fe to my father's ranch. As we left Mary's beautiful home on the Camino del Monte Sol, we both looked at the guardian peak behind it. The little mountain held for her a mystical significance. We talked of that, and then she said, quite casually. Once there lived a woman on that slope of Atalaya. There was little more, a few sentences mentioning New York and strange contrast, only the hint of a forgotten legend.I, too, forgot it, during many later visits to Santa Fe. Then one day that rhythmical sentence came back, I went again to Santa Fe to find the story. I did not find it in the museum or historical libraries or town records, no trace of it in the memory of the 'Anglos.' But at last, in a crumbling adobe near the Chapel of San Miguel, I found an old Spanish-American, and he remembered a little. It must be, Senora, that you mean La Santa. It was so long ago. I was young then. So here is the story. I do not know, but I believe it may have been something like this.

Trade Paperback. Condition: Fine. First Trade Paperback Edition. 283 Pages. First Downtonwn Trade Paperback Edition May 2005. Author of the acclaimed I Do But I Don't, Cara Lockwood delivers an hilarious novel about going home again - and a woman who must make peace with her family, her past and herself. Jen Nakamura Taylor has…always felt like a fish out of water. With her dark, exotic, and hard-to-place looks, she got used to standing in the small Southern town where lshe grew up. Her whole life has been a balancing act between her Japoanese-american mother's family and her father's decidedly offbeat white Southern Clan. Now, living hundreds of miles away from Dixieland in Chicago, she juggles an often demanding job at a local news station and dating disasters. But her already odd and rather stressful life is further upset when word comes that her cousin is getting married and wants Jen to come home for the wedding --- a grand affair that promised to put Scarlett O'Hara to shame. All too aware of the circus she's about to walk into, Jen prepares for the worst --- and finds instead all the proof she needs to understand just how lucky she really is.
