Esta obra determinó un estilo característico para las películas británicas, una combinación de realismo de fondo y profundización en los personaje…s basada en las dos cualidades principales del cine británico durante la guerra: el interés por los detalles documentales y por las inquietudes sociales. Carol Reed afirmaba que el éxito de la película, rodada en 1949, se debe a que fue una de las primeras películas británicas que pudo rodarse principalmente en exteriores. Hasta ese momento, el rodaje en estudio había contribuido al tono general de falso relumbrón. En esta película los laberintos húmedos e interminables de una Viena ocupada y en ruinas son la expresión de las trampas y ambigüedades a las que se enfrentaban sus habitantes, las difíciles y engañosas alternativas entre las que estaban obligados a elegir los supervivientes de la guerra. Los hombres urdían sus pequeños proyectos sobre el tapiz de la ciudad en ruinas. Harry Lime barrenando los lugares bombardeados, el pequeño operario que intenta enriquecerse sobre la superficie de un yermo completamente arrasado, es el símbolo de la impotencia de la astucia frente a la devastación. Lime intenta aprovecharse de la guerra y la escasez; diluye la penicilina que da la vida hasta hacerla portadora de la muerte. Pero está atrapado en el mismo círculo vicioso y en una ciudad cerrada; como dice Calloway, el policía militar británico: Una rata encerrada con una jauría de perros en una habitación sin una sola salida tendría más oportunidades . La guerra y sus secuelas aplastan a todos los individuos, por inteligentes que sean. . A causa de la reputación de Greene y del interés que presentan sus métodos de creación, el guión de El tercer hombre se ha editado íntegramente. Las notas y los paréntesis muestran las adiciones y omisiones realizadas por Carol Reed, e incluso por Orson Welles, en la versión definitiva de la película. El conjunto es un ejemplo perfecto de cómo hasta el guión más brillante y detallado tiene que sufrir alteraciones en el proceso de realización de una película. LIBRO.
