Written and edited by Kincheloe¿s former students and colleagues, the book underscores the depth and breadth of his extraordinarily productive career. In an era marked by the ruling elite¿s desperation as U.S. power wanes globally, this work opens up transformative ways of seeing conducive to challenging the technocratic, imperialistic purpose of the dominant forms of education. Kincheloe would surely have been pleased to see this ¿ among his many postformal contributions ¿ counter-hegemonically providing critical pedagogy with the theoretical and practical strength to contribute to the global uprising currently challenging the imperialist project of wealth extraction and cultural domination around the world. Teaching Joe L. Kincheloe will only gain relevance as the global movement against authoritarianism intensifies and citizens search for new ways to better understand their worlds and the historical development of their own identities.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 284 pp. Englisch.

The authors propose a framework of transformation that would render American culture no longer a culture of conflict, but one whose purpose is to achieve metacultural cohesion. The book illustrates how this change is imperative if we are to ensure that our nation and its individual members thrive domestically ¿ and if we are to enhance our global competitiveness and contributions, geopolitically and otherwise, throughout this century and beyond. Transforming America is a welcome foundational text for teachers and students in education and the social sciences at both undergraduate and graduate levels.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 336 pp. Englisch.

Divided into seven sections that focus on biculturalism, racism, culture and schooling, language rights, Latino issues, the politics of the body, and a public pedagogy of dissent, the essays forcefully speak to the multiple ways in which the dominant culture shapes and perpetuates widespread inequalities and social exclusions, at the expense of oppressed populations. Spanning twenty years, this timely collection not only provides deeply unique political insights on important theoretical and practical concerns, but also offers the reader a historical glimpse into the literary evolution of one of the foremost radical education scholars of our time. Along with the intellectual ingenuity of her scholarly arguments, Darder beautifully weaves each section together with her poems of dissent. A Dissident Voice should be read by every student, professor, administrator and educated reader interested in alternative voices in education. 500 pp. Englisch.

Yet this diagnosis remains very premature even now. The level of unemployment is still high in many countries. While the massive aids provided by the States to the economy have allowed them to avoid the collapse of the economic system, they have paradoxically exposed the States to their own failure. Many countries in Europe are in precarious situations. Far beyond Europe the role played by the State is in question. The historical novel The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, in which two weaker sovereign powers (Shu and Wu) collude to defend themselves against the dominance of another power (Wei), is here identified as a particular inspiration for Mao in building a Sino-Soviet alliance in opposition to the powerful United States. This classical Chinese text provided Mao with a framework for understanding the complexity of global politics, establishing a balance with the two superpowers, and gaining diplomatic autonomy in Chinäs development. This study traces Maös use of a tripolar policy throughout his leadership, including the role of the Korean War in isolating China, the influence of Sino-US hostility on Maös Cultural Revolution in the 1960s, and the initiation of ¿ping-pong diplomacy¿ with the United States to counteract the Soviet threat. By the end of the year, however, the company was close to financial ruin, culminating in its dissolution and subsequent reestablishment. The financial crisis was only one element of controversy during the centenary year. During this period, the remit of the Abbey Theatre as a house for the performance of Irish identity and new Irish writing was brought into question. While debates unfolded over the artistic and financial crises, many commentators queried the very nature of, or need for, a national theatre in twenty-first-century Ireland.Examining organizational issues such as finance and public policy, as well as wider questions about the representation of Irishness on the national stage and the shaping of collective memory through commemoration, this book questions the way that the private concerns of the Irish National Theatre reflect greater issues within Irish society. Drawing together personal interviews, government documents, media sources and comparative studies from the history of the Republic, the author interweaves current and past crises of the Abbey Theatre with the social, cultural and financial anxieties of an evolving Ireland.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 300 pp. Englisch.

Identity is central to all human beings as we are all concerned with how to conceive of ourselves, present ourselves and comprehend our relationships with others. The book tackles the problem of how personal identity is made visible and intelligible to others through language, and how this may be constrained. Part One, Emblematic identities, focuses on the construction of self-definitions based on various forms of group identities, including national and ethnic ones. Part Two, Multicultural Identities, looks at negotiation of identities in multicultural contexts involving relations of power, drawing on examples from Europe and the Americas. Finally, Part Three, Emergent Identities, collects empirical studies based on a close reading of texts in which identities are being articulated and negotiated.» (Hanna Püaczewska, University of Regensburg) 232 pp. Englisch.

In recent decades, however, migration patterns have intensified and undergone significant changes, especially after the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989/90 and Poland¿s accession to the European Union in 2004. This collection of essays is the first to explicitly address the cultural impact of Polish migration to three European countries that have absorbed the major part of the recent exodus: Germany, Ireland, and UK. The volume analyses cultural activities of Poles abroad, explores topical trends in Polish migrant literature, and discusses the representation of migrants in film. By opening up a decidedly cultural perspective, the essays hope to break new ground and enrich the scientific discourse on migration in the European context. 312 pp. Englisch.

Aiming to trace the development of the concept of peace from the foundation of the UN until today, the book investigates on what conceptual understanding the UN was instituted in 1945 and what notion of peace has become apparent in subsequent UN policy as it is performed by the primary UN organs. Along the lines of this research program, the book seeks to reveal the changing underlying assumptions about how a peaceful world order looks and how it should be brought about. Beyond these aspects of semantic change, the book also explores the institutional dimension of this organizational concept by carving out how it is anchored in functional-normative structures of the world organization, its policy, and rhetoric. It builds on an interdisciplinary approach of institutional analysis and conceptual explanation that combines interpretive methods from international law scholarship, conceptual history and policy analysis. 370 pp. Englisch.

On the occasion of the 75 anniversary of its outbreak, the new angle on the relations between these authors and Spain is the examination of the mutual bond and its fruits from the point of view of life-writing. The earliest attempts were mythical accounts invoking miracles and intentional explanations involving spirits, angels, and gods. It was the ancient Greeks who first achieved a more rational understanding of the world as shown in their prescient theories of evolution, atomism, heliocentrism, and physical cosmologies.Later developments include the supernatural worldview of the medieval period, followed by the Arabic renewal of the Greek achievements by translating their manuscripts and emulating their research. This endeavor led to the scholastics of the Renaissance reviving and revising Aristotle¿s worldview, and to the introduction of some of the crucial concepts of later classical science. The latter, inaugurated by Copernicus¿ defense of heliocentrism followed by the remarkable discoveries of Kepler, Gilbert, Harvey, and Galileo, culminated in Newton's universal laws, forces, cosmology, and optical theory, which formed modern classical science. Newton¿s deterministic cosmology of absolute space and time persisted until the introduction of quantum mechanics and Einstein¿s relativity theories in the twentieth century. This book clearly establishes that there is an inevitable conflict between science and religion and why science is prevailing.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 174 pp. Englisch.

However, his whimsical play has long challenged critics to read him with any depth. After winning the Yale Prize in 1967 for his first book, The Lost Pilot, published when he was just twenty-three, Tate has since gone on to win major literary awards including the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, and the Tanning Prize for Lifetime Achievement from the Academy of American Poets. This is the first monograph dedicated to Tate¿s ¿uvre. The author provides a practical reading theory for Tate, complete with contextual frameworks. Close readings of Tate¿s work are informed by the purposeful purposelessness of Kant, the surrealist debt to Breton, and the problems and pleasures of language as explored by Derrida. Tate¿s great achievement is no less than a reconfiguring of the modern American lyric as a poetry of dramatic and dialogic narrative. Composed out of ¿odds and ends . of no great moment¿, as the poet himself writes, Tate¿s work extends the varied American traditions of writers such as William Carlos Williams, Wallace Stevens, John Berryman, and John Ashbery.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 268 pp. Englisch.

Add to basketBuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -A religious reformation occurred in the Roman Empire of the fourth and fifth centuries which scholars often call Christianization. Examining evidence relevant to Roman Africa of this period, this book sharpens understanding of this religious revolution. Focusing on the activities of Augustine and his colleagues from Augustine¿s ordination as a priest in 391, to the fall of the Emperor Honorius¿ master of soldiers, Stilicho, in 408, it proposes Catholicization as a term to more precisely characterize the process of change observed. Augustine and Catholic Christianization argues that at the end of the fourth and beginning of the fifth century Augustine emerged as the key manager in the campaign to Catholicize Roman Africa by virtue of a comprehensive strategy to persuade or suppress rivals, which notably included Donatists, Arians, Manichees, and various kinds of polytheism. Select sermons from 403 and 404 reveal that Augustine¿s rhetoric was multivalent. It addressed the populus and the elite, Christians and non-Christians, Catholics, and Donatists.Key sources examined are selected laws of the Theodosian Code, the Canons of the African Council of Catholic Bishops, Augustine¿s Dolbeau sermons (discovered in 1990), Contra Cresconium, as well as other sermons, letters, and treatises of Augustine. This book clarifies our perception of Augustine and Christianity in the socio-religious landscape of Late Roman Africa in at least three ways. First, it combines theological investigation of the sources and development of Augustine¿s ecclesiology with sociohistorical tracing of the process of Catholicization. Second, an account of the evolution of Augustine¿s self-understanding as a bishop is given along with the development of his strategy for Catholicization. Third, Augustine is identified as resembling modern political «spin-doctors» in that he was a brilliant spokesperson, but he did not work alone; he was a team player. Neuware -The Use of Exodus in Hebrews illustrates how traditions and hermeneutics have significantly determined people¿s valuations of the relationship between the Old and New Covenants in Hebrews. By showing how the author of Hebrews uses the canonical revelation from Exodus to argue rhetorically, ontologically, and hermeneutically that Jesus Christ is the New Covenant priest in the heavenly tabernacle, this book offers an epistemological lens from Exodus to identify the correct view of the relationship between the Old and New Covenants.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 236 pp. Englisch.

This should not, however, be interpreted in a purely politico-economic context, since consideration must also be given to cultural globalization, which renders intercultural dialogue necessary supported by qualified translators and interpreters who were gaining an important role as language mediators. In accordance with CIUTI¿s wishes, the contributors focused on the effects of the new political and economic global scene from different perspectives, among them the issue of effective and efficient training supported by novative approaches. The tasks of language services of the European Commission, the Russian Federation and Central Asia were dealt with, Asiäs driving forces in translation and interpreting were highlighted, namely China and its ASEAN neighbours. Finally, an attempt was made to create a link to economic geography which would make it possible to determine which regions favour the translation industry, which specialised areas have become leaders of international trade and which language combinations would be advisable. This book contains contributions in English, French, and German. 418 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -This study proposes a comparative accounting framework for assessing cost recovery of water supply and sewerage services for households and agriculture in line with the requirements of Article 9 of the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD). It provides an integrative analysis of the partly contradictory objectives of Article 9 and the Directive¿s approach to cost recovery. The book defines cost categories and accounting guidelines in line with the specific requirements of WFD Article 9. On this basis, an integrative framework for analysing different financing schemes for water services provision and their compliance with the objectives of Article 9 is developed, along with a pragmatic approach for the incorporation of environmental and resource costs in the overall cost recovery analysis. 378 pp. Englisch.

This volume focuses on foundational texts as they are read across cultures, languages and historical contexts. Its goal is to reflect on canonical texts ¿ from Homer¿s Odyssey to Murakami¿s Genji, from Cervantes to Mayan hieroglyphs, from Dante to Coetzee, from Goethe to Lezama Lima, from the Thousand and One Nights to Jorge Luis Borges ¿ in a global perspective: how they are translated, appropriated, transformed, how they travel across different cultures and languages, their foundational status evolving accordingly in a post-European world.Foundational Texts of World Literature includes contributions by Gerardo Aldana, Sandra Bermann, Piero Boitani, Michael Emmerich, Azadeh Yamini Hamedani, Stefan Helgesson, Paulo Lemos Horta, Juan Pablo Lupi, Peter Madsen, Ulrich Marzolph, Suzanne Saïd, Evanghelia Stead, Mads Rosendahl Thomsen, and Richard Van Leeuwen.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 238 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Life Histories of Bahá¿í Women in Canada: Constructing Religious Identity in the Twentieth Century is an unprecedented study of the essential features of living a Bahá¿í life, examining contributions and experiences of a diverse group of Canadian women and men in a new religion through a sociological framework and a women-centred perspective. The key figures in the Bahá¿í Faith, early female heroes, major teachings of the religion, and Canadian Bahá¿í history are detailed. A background on social history and the feminization of religion also provides a context for twentieth century Canadian life. Drawing upon Western religious and secular thought and practice, theories and social attitudes about the nature of woman and the Bahá¿í perspective on these topics are explicated. These stirring narratives, historical and contemporary, provide a compelling perspective on social processes and interactional dimensions of Bahá¿í community life. The life histories also illustrate, in poignant, humorous, and inspiring ways, how these notable Bahá¿ís «story» themselves along the way.The teachings of the Bahá¿í Faith are remarkably forward looking. One of the foundational principles is the oneness of humanity, and an integral part of this oneness is the equality of women with men. Lay readers and students of religion, sociology, and women¿s and gender studies, will be interested in how members make meaning of these teachings on equality and how women¿s participation in the Bahá¿í institutional system is promoted and maintained. 242 pp. Englisch.
