Reconnus principalement pour la richesse inventive des formes, les arts africains accordent ils un rôle au jeu des couleurs? Le sujet n'avait jamais été examiné… de façon approfondie et ceux qui l'avaient évoqué ont cru y reconnaître les effets d'une décadence ou des emprunts à l'Occident. Voici donc rassemblés dans ce livre, à travers la statuaire et l'art du masque, quelques témoignages indiscutables, parmi lesquels des vestiges colorés antérieurs au contact avec les Européens. Dans la continuité historique s'impose l'omniprésence de la couleur: application de pigments d'origines minérale ou végétale mais aussi placages de métaux, recouvrement de perles, élaboration de patines protectrices de toutes sortes. Même si la couleur ne subsiste plus que sous la forme résiduelle de simples traces, ces sculptures authentiques et anciennes sont marquées par l'objectif premier de leurs créateurs: assurer l'efficacité rituelle. Devant ces ultimes témoins de techniques ancestrales, les analyses de la philosophie de l'Art ne s'opposent nullement à celles de l'anthropologie culturelle: ces deux voies complémentaires visent à favoriser l'appréhension et l'appréciation esthétiques de la couleur des œuvres africaines.

Ils pouvaient avoir différents usages selon les peuples d'Afrique noire: certains étaient chargés de découvrir un sorcier, d'autres de rétablir l'ordre, d'autres enco…re étaient employés dans des fêtes rituelles. Pour les fêtes de deuil, par exemple, les Vouvi utilisaient des "masques blancs": ces masques étaient peints en blanc pour évoquer la couleur de la mort. Fixé à la face du danseur par des lanières, le masque blanc représentait le portrait idéalisé du mort que l'on voulait honorer. Ainsi espérait-on apaiser l'esprit du mort. Quant aux masques boa, il semblerait qu'ils servaient plutôt lors des rites de guerre. Aujourd'hui, chez de nombreux peuples au moment de certaines fêtes, les jeunes gens façonnent toutes sortes de masques de divertissement représentant des ancêtres, des personnages curieux ou ridicules ou encore des génies-animaux de la forêt. Comme tous les objets devant servir à des usages rituels, les masques ne pouvaient être taillés au village sous les yeux des curieux. Le sculpteur travaillait dans un lieu écarté. Il s'inspirait d'un modèle existant mais ne le copiait jamais. Ainsi chaque masque est unique et différent des autres. ISBN 9782906067196 Sprache: Französisch Gewicht in Gramm: 496.
