Griffin left Edgefield, South Carolina and rode off to Virginia to take up duty with the Confederate Army in a style that befitted a Southern gentleman: on a fine-blooded horse, with two slaves to wait on him, two trunks, and his favorite hunting dog. He was thirty-five years old, a wealthy planter, and the owner of sixty-one slaves when he joined Wade Hampton's elite Legion as a major of cavalry. He left behind seven children, the eldest only twelve, and a wife who was eight and a half months pregnant. As a field officer in a prestigious unit, the opportunities for fame and glory seemed limitless. In A Gentleman and an Officer, Judith N. McArthur and Orville Vernon Burton have collected eighty of Griffin's letters written to his wife Leila at the Virginia front, and during later postings on the South Carolina coast. Extraordinary in their breadth and volume, the letters encompass Griffin's entire Civil War service. Unlike the reminiscences and biographies of high-ranking, well-known Confederate officers or studies and edited collections of letters of members of the rank and file, this collection sheds light on the life of a middle officer - a life turned upside down by extreme military hardship and complicated further by the continuing need for reassurance about personal valor and status common to men of the southern gentry. With a fascinating combination of military and social history, A Gentleman and an Officer moves from the beginning of the Civil War at Fort Sumter through the end of the war and Reconstruction, vividly illustrating how the issues of the Civil War were at once devastatingly national and revealingly local.

Still, despite the vast amount of research that has been conducted on conflict and narrative in a number of disciplines, the way they interrelate has seldom been explored in any depth; in fact, most studies treat narrative merely as a source of information about conflict rather then as a part of conflict processes. The contributors to this collection argue that language consists of socially and politically situated practices that are differentially distributed on the basis of gender, class, race, ethnicity, and other categories. They draw on new approaches to the study of both discourse and political processes in challenging previous assumptions about narrative and social conflict as they interpret disputes that emerge in a variety of settings in Brazil, Fiji, Crete, Mexico, the United States, and Venezuela. These essays substantially further our theoretical and methodological understanding of narrative and conflict and how they intersect.

Add to basketBuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - This collection of essays on modernist culture reassesses the convergence of low and high cultures, of socialist and aesthete, late Victorian and young Georgian, the popular and the coterie. Academic literary studies have until recently preferred to treat the 'opaque', 'difficult' writings of high moderns Conrad, Yeats, Woolf, and Eliot, and the more accessible work of the low moderns Kipling, Shaw, and Wells in separate categories. In contributions by scholars David Bromwich, Roy Foster, Edna Longley, Louis Menand, Edward Mendelson, and others, High and Low Moderns brings these writers into critical proximity. Essays on such topics as the public mourning of Queen Victoria, Florence Farr and the 'New Woman', the Edwardian Shaw, Lady Gregory's attraction to Irish felons, and the high artistic uses of low entertainments - cinema, detective fiction, and journalismintroduce a subtler model of modernism, in which 'demotic' and 'elite' cultural forms criticize, imitate, and address one another.

In Bernard Schwartz's latest work, based on a conference at the University of Tulsa College of Law, we get the first retrospective on the Warren Court - a detailed analysis of the Court's accomplishments, including original pieces by well-known judges, professors, lawyers, popular writers such as Anthony Lewis, David Halberstam, David J. Garrow, and a rare personal remembrance by Justice William J. Brennan, Jr. The Warren Court: A Retrospective begins with an examination of the Court's decisions in a variety of different fields, such as equal protection, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and criminal law. The work continues with The Justices, an intimate look at the principal protagonists in the Court's operation. Then, in A Broader Perspective, the book looks at the Court from an historical perspective, demonstrating its impact on the legal profession and jurisprudence, its international impact, and its legacy.

Neuware - The Exultet rolls of southern Italy are parchment scrolls containing text and music for the blessing of the great Easter candle; they contain magnificent illustrations, often turned upside down with respect to the text, The Exultet in Southern Italy provides a broad perspective on this phenomenon that has long attracted the interest of those interested in medieval art, liturgy, and music. This book considers these documents in the cultural and liturgical context in which they were made, and provides a perspective on all aspects of this particularly southern Italian practice. While previous studies have concentrated on the illustrations in these rolls, Kelly's book also looks at the particular place of the Exultet in changing ceremonial practices, provides background on the texts and music used in southern Italy, and inquires into the manufacture and purpose of the Exultets--why they were made, who owned them, and how they were used.

Add to basketBuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Pattern Recognition Using Neural Networks covers traditional linear pattern recognition and its nonlinear extension via neural networks. The approach is algorithmic for easy implementation on a computer, which makes this a refreshing what-why-and-how text that contrasts with the theoretical approach and pie-in-the-sky hyperbole of many books on neural networks. It covers the standard decision-theoretic pattern recognition of clustering via minimumdistance, graphical and structural methods, and Bayesian discrimination. Looney has written a graduate level textbook combining the fields of pattern recognition and neural networks. It contains some theory of why the most useful networks work, the pitfalls, the algorithms to implement them, and their applications. This text is suitable for an advanced undergraduate or graduate level course in pattern recognition or neural networks for students in computer science or electrical and computer engineering. It is also useful as a reference and a resource for practitioners and researchers.
