Le sujet n'avait jamais été examiné de façon approfondie et ceux qui l'avaient évoqué ont cru y reconnaître les effets d'une décadence ou des emprunts à…l'Occident. Voici donc rassemblés dans ce livre, à travers la statuaire et l'art du masque, quelques témoignages indiscutables, parmi lesquels des vestiges colorés antérieurs au contact avec les Européens. Dans la continuité historique s'impose l'omniprésence de la couleur : application de pigments d'origines minérale ou végétale mais aussi placages de métaux, recouvrement de perles, élaboration de patines protectrices de toutes sortes. Même si la couleur ne subsiste plus que sous la forme résiduelle de simples traces, ces sculptures authentiques et anciennes sont marquées par l'objectif premier de leurs créateurs : assurer l'efficacité rituelle.
